(Copied from theme #1... See below for theme #9 guidelines)
Hey guys,
I have a list of different threads I'm gonna start, spreading them out every few days. Each one will have a different theme. I would appreciate if you'd follow the rules (more like guidelines) just to keep it fun. eg. Ya know how people put up "Post your favorite picture of the year" threads, and people HAVE to put up like three pictures. Let's pay attention and try to stick to the rules. As winter creeps in, I will keep starting new threads and we can have fun with this while we look out the window at the leafless trees with tears in our eyes. If you have any ideas, feel free to PM me. Of course, I don't care if you start your own "themed" thread, but I was taking it upon myself to plan out these threads over the next few weeks as I have seen the forum die off along with the herping. *Don't let these "End of the Year" threads have any effect on any end of the year summary posts y'all were planning on doing. These will all have specific themes. I'm also hoping this will bring some of the non-posters out of the woodwork to share a photo or two. (You know who you are.). It's an opportunity to just share photos with peers, despite our herping/conservational differences. I don't mean to call you guys out and mean no offense. Just think about sharing here and there if you can with sound mind. I look forward to everyone's posts. Let's make this fun because its getting boring outside!

Theme 9: HERP IN HABITAT
1. Go back through your finds over the year and find any shots you have that show a habitat in the photo.
2. Post your favorite five shots maximum. Make an effort to post one of each herp group from the NE (Frogs, Salamanders, Lizards, Turtles, Snakes). If you simply don't have one of each (eg. Because your name is Kyle and you refuse to touch anything), you can still use five pictures but no more than three from the same herp group.
3. These can be either posed or en situ shots. The focus is primarily on the animal and its habitat. *There will be an en situ thread at some point. Feel free to discuss whether it was posed, en situ, or omit details as deemed necessary.
4. Feel free to be as kosher (turtle on a log in a pond) or as creative (ringneck in a shingle pile) as you wish. Anything goes, but describe why you chose what you did if your instincts tell you others will question your choice.
5. Most importantly, please use discretion with sensitive species and identifiable landmarks. *No coastals posed on the Atsion Lake sign.
Ok, Hab at it...

A northern watersnake basks over a section of the C&O Canal
A black racer as found basking in the morning after a heavy rain in delaware.
A copperhead peeks its head out of its winter den on a bright spring afternoon in Maryland.
A newt swims just beneath the surface of a vernal pond in Frederick County

These are one of my favorite types of photos, both to take and see. Nice photos up all ready; I look forward to watching this thread develop. Here's my contribution:
Terrapene carolina - eastern box turtle soaking in a puddle after a summer rain
Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta - copperbelly watersnake heading for the water
Sceloporus undulatus - fence swift posing on a rock ledge
Apparently I didn't take any frog-in-habitat photos this year, so here's two salamanders:
Eurycea longicauda - longtail salamander in a creek in mid-autumn
Cryptobranchus alleganiensis - juvenile hellbender in a cool, mountain stream

Jason,
I really like both the box turtle and copperbelly shots! Makes me eager for spring.

I'd like to skip a rock across this pond and see if it would pop him in the head......Darnell Brister wrote: HERPER IN HABITAT

I dont have a picture but I can one up both of you ^^. When I was 10 I stepped over (and I do litterally mean step over) the same rattle snake 3 times. Didnt see it at all and it didnt rattle but I managed to step over it not once, not twice but three times. I also almost stepped on a ferdelance in coasta rica but I managed to jump over it.
Here's a turtle from South Carolina, not sure what it is but it was big.
And of course everyone loves a good marbled.

Here are a trio of my favorite shots from the year. All are en situ.
First is a queen snake chilling in some bushes.
Next, my first pine snake as it was found.
And last, but not least, a nice orange hognose trying his hardest to blend into debris along the trail.

These are all en situ shots as found....
First, a giant gopher I spotted on one of my better days in September.....
Up close
This was my first red rock rattlesnake ever, and probably wouldn't have ever known he was there if he didn't do a slight rattle....
One of my many Helleri friends of the year, spotted from a distance...
Quite perturbed.....

Common Watersnake
This guy made a habit of hanging out on mossy hummocks surrounded by water.
Ps, it's actually a rattlesnake named Brick.
And here are some leaves:

the most fierce eaters with a wide variety of prey , highest metabolism in my opinion
got a chance to stick a camera in a mountain crevice to figure out if it was a rat or racer....the verdict...smooth scaled N.racer
this is a lovely display of a herp in habitat .........scaling dangerous rocks to a ridge for other herps ......rats love the elevation
and since i commonly find these guys basking in bushes over hanging streams .....
