On January 1, Ray and I decided to check out a swampy area a few miles from here. We were aiming for this habitat:
We had to pass the gate, which is sometimes closed. But it was open, so we entered.
Someone has gone to a great deal of trouble to construct an elevated walkway above the water. A few feet along, it gets kind of interesting, in a Blair Witch Project kind of way...
Some of the items are ridiculously high up in the trees. I don't know how they did it.
It turned out to be a pretty lame day, herp-wise. Our first find of 2012:
Welcome to Alabama, ya'll

Bizarre, but kinda cool.
It may take me a while to catch up with y'all in the Anole department.

Wow, what a relief to know they finally killed Harry Potter. I was getting kinda tired of his crap....
Oh, and nah....no voodoo in there....just looks like New Orleans debris goths....maybe check the local theatre for the oldest dark nailed parent haters. Or look in the book store....next to the vampire stuff. 'visigoths?'
Good for y'all getting herps on the 1st. I think the temp got above freezing for 6 or 7 hours today in Huntsville.

Pshaw! Silly teenagers trying to be different. If there were signs of animal sacrifice, then I'd worry...

Used to address more than one person, it should be "all y'all". Harrumph!

Hans, you are the languages guru, so I'll certainly defer to your professional judgement...but isn't "ya'll" already plural? I never say "ya'll" to a single person. It would be like saying, "You guys" to one dude.

Well, this source states:Tamara D wrote:Hans, you are the languages guru, so I'll certainly defer to your professional judgement...but isn't "ya'll" already plural? I never say "ya'll" to a single person. It would be like saying, "You guys" to one dude.
y'all: Southern 2nd person plural pronoun. Most concise and easily distinguished. Despite the assurance of some emails that have been passing around, "y'all" is plural. Only an absolute idiot would use it as a singular pronoun.
I dispute that, not only because the author writes bad English ("emails that have been passing around"), but also because I've been reassured of the opposite on numerous occasions.
But I shall let the real Southerners answer this.

It definitely is not singular, ever...that just feels and sounds wrong. However, I clearly have been spelling it incorrectly.

Definitely not a friendly neighborhood. I've run into some spooky folks there. I wouldn't suggest anyone go there alone or unarmed.
Welcome to the forum! Glad to see another south Alabamian here. PM me if you want to join forces for a herping mission.

Y'all is short for "you all," and is used to address more than one individual.
