Very nice Rich! Always look forward to your pics and love those panamints! Not a lot of people observing/photographing stephensi behavior. They are gorgeous animals and remind me of a cross between pyrrhus & lutosus.

Beautiful photos of some beautiful snakes. How close, geographically, do stephansi get to C.o.lutosus? are there any areas of sympatry?

Cheers

Excellent! I've still never seen male combat - something that I must fix! Your shots are great and a few of those mints look especially tasty! Thanks.

Thanks EW!

Thats something we hope to maybe clear up in the next year or two. There are supposed to be some areas of overlap along the CA/NV border. There have been some photos over the years that look like possible hybrids. However last year (pics will come later as I manage to get to them) we found some snakes we know to be lutosus with amazingly stephensi - like patterns (the same den had typical L3 clade type lutosus mixed right in, it would be very easy for someone to think they were seeing two different species), so the possible hybrids we have seen pics of may actually be just lutosus with similar patterns due to edge of range effect/occupying similar niches. This could very well account for unverified reports we have recieved of lutosus and stephensi denning together. We have seen this many times before with abyssus/viridis and abyssus/concolor where they are syntopic. Time will tell :)

Cheers,

Rich
