We can rebuild it, we have the technology...

Post by Don Becker » June 7th, 2010, 4:02 am

I was not able to sleep last night, and when I did finally get to sleep, it was a short rest. I woke up sometime around 5am, and came down stairs to start my day early. Apparently I am not the only one who could not sleep. Scott had sent me an email telling me that his host had pulled the plug on his server, and deleted EVERYTHING. He sounded pretty depressed about it all, but I reassured him that he has not simply built up a website over the years, but built a community, and that community would not just pack up and move on.

So what now? Let's help Scott rebuild. This forum is being hosed on my server for the moment, while we get everything back in place. You will need to register again, and for the moment, the black theme you all know and love does not exist, but I am working on it. I have gained much of knowledge from this forum over the last few years, and I know others have too. All we need from you guys is some patience, and just to do what you have always done, continue to make kick ass posts!

Thanks
--Don

I was wondering what had happened.

Rebuilding it is going to be quite the challenge. The forum had become such a massive resource for myself as well as other herpers. It is really a shame that all of that is gone now. That is a lot of time and effort that has disappeared. Oh well, at least the drivel is all gone for the moment =D

Wow, this is nothing short of catastrophic  ! Yes, by all means we must rebuild it. I'm heading out to West Texas later this week, hopefully I'll have some great shots to contribute when I return....

That is indeed terrible - but I'm hanging on for the rebuild.

Any details on how / why this happened?

...what a lousy deal .... & why do i smell Tx Kingsnake musk all over this ????? Does anyone know the whereabouts of JB this weekend ???

...surely one of our techies managed to archive the many many super threads... hell i have a bunch of em saved off as .pdf's

..my condolences to Scott & his team, the herp community at large, I hope anyone who reformatted or deleted the files is held accountable, as this collection of photographs & stories was damn near priceless in my h-o ...

... mebbe the next iteration needs to be "mirrored" into a reputable organization such as the Chicago or Tucson Herp Societies?

... condolences but im holding onto hope that a restore from an older save point is in the offing ...

... suppose i otta leave a splash o color ...

This is an astounding loss. There were a lot of resources in those threads, a lot of information that is now gone. The bright side is that we now have the potential to rebuild into something even greater. Let's do this!

 :o

Well as someone who manages a Data Center, this is NOT acceptable....

Did they do this maliciously? Or did the server die?

Ill give Scott a call and see if our hosting has what he needs. (I ll do it free.)

Words fail me - what an incredible loss of data, information and resources, and what a blow to Scott and all the HerpNation crew. I do hope at least some of the lost stuff can be recovered somehow.

But most of all, I am glad that this community will rise from the ashes.

I had a handful of websites built at one time and lost EVERYTHING when I accidentally deleted it all in my cpanel while using Filezilla. I freaked! But I was able top get it all back after paying a fee to the hosting site. Is this an option in this case? I think they keep sites archived for just this scenario.

Well, as I sit here completely speechless, the only thing that I can blurt out is that I will be honored to offer any help that I can. I surely didn't expect something this catastrophic to happen. Here are some pics to help if they will.

BUMMER!

Rebuild it and they will come ...... back.

If anyone can put the FHF back together again, it's you two guys. Please let me know if I can do anything to help. I think I still have the notices we put up describing the FHF and NAFHA.

Lots of old fieldherpforum.com contents can be found on the "Wayback Machine" Internet Archive, starting with this URL:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.fieldherpforum.com

Unfortunately the most recent content they have is from June 2008, so it's by no means complete. And only some of the content is present even for the dates they do have. But they do have over 5000 pages of archived info from this site, so maybe there's some content worth manually retrieving?

There is also some newer content (up to Feb 2009) archived at the experimental new version of the Wayback Machine at:

http://waybackmachine.org/*/http://www.fieldherpforum.com

Unfortunately it seems to choke on .php pages and doesn't provide the fallback list of "all archived pages from this site" that the www.archive.org UI does.

But, for example, I can get to the lists of herp references by state from this waybackmachine.org URL (though most/all of them are missing the cover pictures), and I couldn't get to those lists from the archive.org URL. So it's another way to dig up some of the old content.
