Blacktail Cribos

I've been breeding blacktail cribos for a few years now, and I've found them to be an extremely rewarding species to be working with. This year, my partner and I have finally been able to produce babies from a different line that has more black mottling on the upper 1/3 of the body. We've been focusing on propagating our usual "clean" line with highly contrasting animals and now our "mottled" line.

Here are some pics of both hatchlings and adults from each line...

Nice! I'm digging my cribos (2 from you, 2 from Heliburn). They're fun snakes

John,

If my snake room had more room I would really want some cribos. Awesome shots, you're always producing some awesome animals.

Thanks Justin.

Do you still keep any Liophis?

I would like to but since they're mildly venomous, my wife made all that go away when we had our first child. So my huge colonies of scorpions are all gone now. I really loved breeding those above all else. Some day I'll do Liophis again, and maybe try to get some Blue Baron's from you?

Neat stuff John!

Out of curiosity, does the mottling come from a specific locality or have you mixed localities to get the best pairing or are the all from the same locality?

Chris,

I would imagine they're mixed. It's pretty difficult to find blacktails with locality info these days.

However, we have examined a lot of museum specimens and have found a ton of variation within the same geographic ranges. This variation includes "unicolors" found in blacktail range and "blacktails" found in unicolor range. I would imagine most localities have a lot of different looking melanurus.

So, I see and read about these beautiful snakes on here quite regularly and I am unfamiliar with them(part of the reason I love this place, exposure to new and exciting things). I am very intrigued by them. Could I ask what the current latin is for them so I can do a bit more digging?? Thanks guys.

Drymarchon melanurus.

I'm in the midst of putting together a detailed care sheet for my website, although their care is very similar to the care of the Eastern indigo. Care sheets are pretty available for them.

I have often thought of adopting a relinquished adult - even if imperfect , with a damaged rostral , whatever, when I swoon over your perfect ones.

I keep having to put off plans to move into a place with more room and then I see posts like yours that pluck me in the side like a spur and before I know it Im going over enclosure design in my head, to do such a magnificent and vibrant animal justice
