I learned a lot about Giant Asian Forest Scorpions (Heterometrus longimanus) on the weekend. After seeing them mostly in trees for a year, I finally roadcruised one last Saturday. Having absolutely no experience with this family of animals, I was at a loss as to how to pick up and bag the little APC (Armored Pain Carrier). Luckily, I had Tom Charlton and his cousin Drew in the car, and they showed me how it's done.

On Sunday I took the scorp, my macro lens, and a pair of leather gloves to a proper photoshoot environment and had a lot of fun exploring.

Things I learned:

- If you want them to U-turn and face you, touch their tail.

- Snake hooks don't really work with them.

- The bigger the pincers, the weaker the venom. This guy's tools were surprisingly strong and clearly noticeable through the gloves, while the stinger was surprisingly thin, feeble, and operated in a rather sluggish manner.

- They have three eyes each on the corner of the "face", and two more very close together on top, at the "nape of the neck". They must have awesome line(s) of sight!

- DAMN, they're ugly!!!
