Found here in Sarawak the other night, sitting conveniently in the road: an almost five inch long katydid with mandibles powerful enough to take chunks of flesh from your finger. The photoshoot at home was not without its thrills, especially when the beast tried to jump on top ot the lens, causing photographer and lighting assistant alike to hastily pull back all fingers, hands and other flesh in reach of the critter. Safe to say, I almost lost my shit more than once. Their "beak" is shaped to tear big chunks out of things, and ever since my right thumb was scarred by a katydid half that size a few years back in Taiwan, I have more respect for these mandibles than for all the teeth in a ratsnake's mouth. Also worth checking out are the spikes on the shoulder armor (hence the common name "Dragon-headed Katydid")

Not sure if it's Lesina ensifera or Ellatodon blanchardi...but what do I know about bugs.

Even the puny by comparison Katydids I see in the Midwest make me pause and give them respect.
