Solifugid needs a mint

Post by gbeck »

Found this little guy while road cruising Saturday night. This was apparently the best thing we had for a size comparison.

Hilarious!!  I haven't seen a solifugid in the first place. I have been close enough to smell other inverts that size- mostly spiders, no scent. Certain herps I encountered do need breath mints.

Now, is that a juvenile or a small species?

I imagine it was a juvenile. When we first saw it at a distance, it was so small that I thought it was a cricket, except for the amazing speed at which it traveled.

I agree that it was likely a juvenile, but admit that it could be a smaller subspecies. This specimen was unidentifiable until it stopped, and if you took your eye off of it, it was very difficult to find again. I have seen several other solifugids in Utah that were substantially larger. Love the photo, Gavin!
