Trapdoor spiders

Post by Joseph S. »

Anyone else a fan of these guys?

I've enjoyed observing what is either Bothriocyrtum californicum or Hebestatis theveneti in SD County-they are quite abundant in the right kind of habitat-of course you need to know what to look for since they camouflage their burrows so well. I brought back a couple to see how well they do in captivity as well. Remarkable creatures. I'd appreciate any photos, sightings, or stories!

Apparently B. californicum occurs on at least Catalina and Santa Cruz Island(never saw the on Catalina-but I was not quite sure what to look for back then). How such a sedentary spider made it out there is pretty amazing.
