Yellowstone trip from '07

Post by herpseeker1978 » February 17th, 2012, 8:42 pm

I was into mammals long before I really got into herping. I really like all wildlife, but it never really occurred to me to go look for them other than at zoos and then I found myself in Idaho and was seeing moose everywhere and realized I just loved seeing wildlife! Here are some pictures from a trip I took to Yellowstone a few years ago:
Image
Upper Mesa Falls - not in Yellowstone, but near Island Park, Idaho
Image
Lower Mesa Falls
Image
Muskrat at Big Springs in Island Park, Idaho, one of the sources of the Snake River
Image
other wildlife at Big Springs - Rainbow Trout and some sort of gull, any ID?
Image
Sandhill Cranes
Image
Hawk, ID?

Mule Deer

Rocky Mountain Elk

American Bison in the Lamar Valley

Coyote trying to eat on a bison carcass. The herd noticed and chased off the canine and surrounded the carcass and seemed to show sympathy for the dead animal, very cool event to witness

Captive White Buffalo in Driggs, Idaho. Owned by the Huntsmans, yes those Huntsmans.

Lovely first post of Yellowstone. I think this may become the Snake Road of the Mammal Forum.
I really like the Muskrat shot and the gull/trout shot.

Nice diversity of cool mammals.

Your hawk is a Swainson's.

Love Yellowstone! Nice photos, and good selection of species.

Your hawk is an adult Swainson's hawk.

I took a similiar trip in 2008 or 09. Very cool place and a nice report.

Your gulls should be California Gulls, as that is the default gull at Yellowstone.
