Continued Attack on Endangered Species

Post by BBastarache »

The bill to kill the MA Endangered Species Act: Senate Bill 1854 has been re-designated House Bill 4208, and has officially been sent to the House Committee on Ways and Means. There is a campaign of misinformation about the MESA and what 4208 does and doesn’t do. The bill does is make the statute and regulations unworkable and takes away the funding source for regulating under MESA. It offers no plan for how to protect endangered species.

Don't take my word for it. See what the MA Audubon Society has to say about this (slightly dated)http://www.massaudubon.org/news/newssto ... &type=news

Call your legislators and tell them to OPPOSE House Bill 4208.

It seems to me like it's just a law that states that the DFW can't take or restrict land (I assume this means private land,) because of endagered species. If that's the case, I don't see what the problem with the law is. The Audobon society doesn't actually quote the law, which is a big red flag in my opinion. The text of the Bill is here: http://www.malegislature.gov/Bills/187/House/H04208

The problem is that it would gut the effectiveness of the law. In Massachusetts, unlike some other states, almost all the land is in private hands, so for conservation measures to be effective at all they need to work on private land.
