Hey guys, I meant to post this a while ago but have been busy. My mom, who lives in Montgomery Co., PA (just outside of Philadelphia), was out for a morning walk and found this guy (sorry for the crappy photo). When she sent me the picture I was pretty surprised/excited (and a bit annoyed, since I have yet to find this species myself!). As a kid I scoured this area for years without turning up much at all in the way of herps. The area it was found in was historically highly disturbed/polluted, but recently has undergone habitat restoration - maybe this is a sign that restoration efforts are working!
From searching the HerpNet database, it seems that the last report of Pseudotriton ruber from Montgomery Co. dates to 1941. Just curious of any of you all have seen this species in this county, or if you know of any local agencies that may have additional records?
Thanks!
Zach

They are fairly common. I personally have not targeted them in Montgomery County.

Northern Red salamanders are always a good find! Glad you found one in Montgomery County - I never looked there. I know they are common in other parts of PA.

HerpNet is not all inclusive. It is a database for museum specimens for some of the museums in our area. The majority of the specimens in the database are old, so it is not surprising the latest entry is from 1941.
