We had a lot of rain last weekend and the week before, and I found one in the pond a few weeks ago, so I know they moved into the ponds. We haven't had any rain this week, but would dip netting in the pond still be successful? There hasn't been a freeze or snow, but temp have been in the high 30s and low 40s.

You might only get males until things really get going, but I would just go and see for yourself. I start going this time of the year around here, I generally just stand in the water waist deep if need be and wait and see what's going on. I have insulated chest waders.

Look for spermatophores. I'm a sperm expert... wait. I take that back.

Yea, but there were a few jeff egg masses two weeks ago. I think I'll go wade around the edges and see if I can turn anything up.

I have been catching maculatum on rainy nights since January 20th- males and gravid females alike migrating to cattle ponds. Spermatophores and egg masses have been in the vernal pools at my study site since at least the 29th. I also found tiger sals and jeffersons while road cruising back in January but in smaller numbers.

However, we never found any adults while dip netting or seining (15+ ponds). Granted we were going after the larvae so we weren't getting down into the leaf litter much, but the best way to find them for me so far has been road cruising.

Yea, I'm sure if I could cruise I would find a lot on rainy nights.
