My opinion on that is that like most things we'll only have a select few people with the time, or ability to herp a lot. By a lot I mean 4 days or more a week. I used to be able to, but I work 70 hours a week now and I have toddlers. So the will is there, but time is a killer. The other issue is how do you quantify the records. I mean will someone in Kansas win for posting 2,000 ringnecks? Would it be per species, overall count etc. The different opinions on this will only serve to cause discord. So to me I think that the negative outweighs the benefit. What I would say to do is that if you're in the elite group with the most numbers you rib them, esoterically within the group of elites. That makes this project less intimidating for people who are forced to herp when they can, like me. 5 years ago, I would have been all over a numbers game.
