Red Milk, Speckled King, and no spotted salamander eggs yet

Post by Gary2sons »

Checking our pond for spotted salamanders and still no eggs. Thought for sure they would have went with the last couple rains. Both were about an inch.

Cool today but still decided to check some of our AC. Several ringnecks but really surprised to see this little milk. Finding milks that are not on glades in March is difficult. The speckled king was a nice adult. Both had recently shed.

Looks like it may be a great Spring here in the Midwest!

Forgot to say I did find 4 adult salamanders. Two were under tin on the pond dam and two were under tin that was half in the water. Couple of the females looked like very swollen. That tells me the next decent rain the eggs will be laid. They just come and go so quickly some years. I like it when there are maybe 2 dozen under a single piece of tin.

Anyway hope you all have a great year herping!

Nice pics! Good luck on the salamanders. Hope to find some spotted and tiger salamanders this weekend up here. Lots of rain last few days around NW Ohio and SE Mich. They should be in pools by now.

Couple dozen salamander egg clumps today. Doesn't look like a good year so far but some years are like that.

Also found the same red milk and speckled king from 5 days ago.

Then found this nice red milk under a roofing shingle on the pond dam. Interesting that this same snake was found 3 years ago about 30 feet away. 30 plus bands depending on how you count back by the tail but it seems we do have some that are a little different than the usual looking ones.

Thanks for looking!
