Fossorial snakes?

Post by ThatFrogGuy »

About when do you guys notice all the little snakes come out, specifically browns and ringnecks? I'm wondering if it would be worth it to go out and look for them. Yesterday was high 50's and sunny, today it's 65ish and sunny, tomorrow it's gonne be 70's and raining, and the next two days are supposed to be in the 70's. I'm thinking about targeting them Wednesday.

Thanks,

-Zach

Around here, Ringnecks usually come out late September/early October after the first rains, and go underground around May.

Your temps should be good for ringnecks at least. I haven't seen any browns yet this year, but a buddy has. I've been finding ringnecks and rough earths for the past couple weeks now here in Arkansas. It usually seems to just take a few sunny days of high 50's and low 60's.

Now! They are out right now, since friday Ive seen a red sided garter snake, northern water snake, and a brown snake, I havent seen any ringnecks yet but Ive only hit a new spot on my way home from work and the rocks werent that great, but they have to be out. the rain will especially bring em out, Id look around tomorow.

Ringnecks are out (at least here) already. Flipped 5 under rocks just the other day (March 1st), as well as an earth snake. Temps were in mid 70s and sunny.

Browns have been out for a couple of weeks here in mid Missouri. I found a rough earth yesterday in my back yard, along with several ground skinks, cricket frogs and plains leopard frogs. The peepers and chorus frogs are calling like crazy with all the rain we had today.
