Hi everybody. I feel somewhat silly, which is par for the course, asking this, but I was curious as to exactly what this is.
It was found in the Everglades, about 9pm. We had stopped for a Garter Snake and as we were moving it off the road, this guy was laying 2 feet away at the edge of the pavement.
The scales seem keeled and the eyes are completely black, no pupil showing. Also, not sure if the picture shows, but it has a light dorsal stripe extending it's whole body.
Thanks,
Mike

Dang Mike...looks like a garter to me. Nice!
Re: Snake I.D. please. South Florida.
Thanks for the quick replies.
I was thinking something melanistic, however, I wasn't sure why it's chin would still be white. It's body looked like a Ribbon. It's face though didn't look at all like a Ribbon.
I stared at it for about a minute trying to figure out what in the world it was... nothing clicked. Surprise.
Thanks agian,
Mike

Some melanistic Easterns are all-black:
While others have white patches, especially on the neck:
I never heard of one from Florida (I found all of mine in Ohio). And I've never seen one with that blue coloration.
Nice find!

some are found in western pa.....of course they can occur anywhere.... ...don't take that ENP thing personal... ...we're all paranoid... ...when one reads everglades....MOST think the national park... ...its always good to clarify that we 're outside the restricted area...... in fact we were down south fla during december.... ...and had a GREAT photographic experience and didn't enter the ENP once.... ...feds lost $10....

Here in Ohio I typically find melanistic garters having white chins:

Thanks for all the comparison photos. Some pretty neat animals for sure! I wish I would have taken more time to take pictures.
I should have been more clear, or less suggestive, in my locale description. <note to self>
Thanks again everybody,
Mike
