Breaking the Bet, Part 1: CA and AZ (DUW)

Post by Crazins »

In an an attempt to keep a fellow FHF member from constantly running his mouth here on the forum, I made a bet with him that I would never post on here again if he never posted on here again. However, he has broken our bet (twice), so now I get to break our bet.

So here's some stuff from this year. Enjoy.

Oh yes, before I get started, I'd like to thank all of the wonderful people I have met and herped with this year. Uh let's see...Alex Krohn, Tim Warfel, Tim Borski, Sam Murray, Josh Holbrook, Dan Rieck, John Zegel, Todd Pierson, Kiley Briggs, Brandon LaForest, Brendan O'Connor, Mike Martin, Kerry Nelson, Jake Scott, Kris Haas, Aaron Mills, Josh Parker, Cary Howe, Jeff Miller, Sarah Gilpin, Andrew Gilpin, Derek Dunlop, Jeff Lemm, Young Cage, Jason Folt, Dan Krull, and anyone I forgot as well as everyone I met that the KHS and BOR meetings. It was wonderful seeing all of you again, or meeting you all for the first time. I hope to see all of you in the near future!

Most of all, thanks to Dirk Stevenson for hiring me for the Orianne job!

California:

First herp of the year that wasn't a gopher or a cal king
Valley Garter Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi Calaveras Co, CA

Then I got a job surveying for these in an area where there weren't any
Blunt-nosed Leopard Lizard Gambelia sila (male)
Image

Female

Saw a few of these on surveys though (sorry for the crappy pic)
Northern Pacific Rattlesnake Crotalus oreganus oreganus
Image

On my off time I took my new Canon 100-400 L 5.6 lens out and photo'd birds...

...i love that lens...

So then I drove down to Tucson for the Biology of the Rattlesnakes conference and stopped by SoCal for a quick lizard stop

Got a few snakes too
Young leafnosed snake Phyllorhynchus decurtatus
Image

Red Diamond Rattlesnake Crotalus ruber

And some frogs
Pseudacris cadaverina

And in one pond I found all three spadefoots calling

Nice shots! I was wondering where you've been. It seems the herpers that I know in person post less and less.

Looks like you're getting some sweet shots with that 100-400. I love that beautiful Earless Lizard...and those colorful Collareds. And I don't see too many Bighorns on these forums :)

She proved her lech'ness a few years back in my book. She went out with the boys from Illinois for about a week and hung in there like a champ. She out herped a lot of us, and impressed all of us. That girl is one of the best herpers I've seen, period. You got nothing to prove to me, glad you're back.

I said LECH not midwest. What part of east coast do you not understand in LECH? Unlike Ed Pirog whom has been tolerable of your doucheness towards him I will not be. So how's about you STFU and rub the brown off your nose. I was trying to be a little ribbing upon Marisa to get her to toss up some of her GA and area(s) finds. When I need your 2¢ I'll ask for it Justin. :)

Nice Burrowing Owl photos, and really nice mammal shot too. I didn't know they could wear ear rings. Weird.
Your Trimorph. head shot is great. Thanks for putting the post up..

It was good herping with you even if we didn't necessarily find anything :-/ A couple weeks ago and that 3-species of spadefoot section would have mocked me. Come on down for some fun snakes and funky lizards anytime.

That photo could have been taken in SE Oregon. I would call those Great Basin rattlesnakes despite what the range maps say.

She said it was seen while surveying for Blunt Nose Lep. Liz's, which was right near Carizzo plains. According to G. Nafis:

Among populations of "oreganus" inhabiting arid landscapes near their southern range limits (e.g., southern San Joaquin Valley, Carrizo Plain), there is a tendency toward small size, light ground color, and reduced dorsal blotch size...features that cause these snakes to superficially resemble lutosus."..

Thx for playing...   jim

I know, people have been posting them on here and the earlier sites for years. That doesn't mean they aren't something other than what the range maps say. Fixed the above.

Wasn't going to say anything because I know I've made an ass of myself before... but your photography puts my stuff to shame. Opportunity and how you use your equipment has everything to do with it.

(I'll bet you thought I was going to say you were hot...)(not you warren...)

Nice stuff! Suprisingly for me, my favorite photos are of species that I might normally find less interesting. You did an especially great job on the desert iguanas, earless, and fringe-toes. Nice bird shots too!
Thanks,

Some real nice work with your camera...I especially enjoyed the amplexing toads in the muddy ponds, and the naked ladies (flowers) on California's north coast, both nostalgic sites for me. The aberrant Rhinocheilius is something new to me. Thanks for posting, and we are looking forward to seeing more from you SE locales.
