Topic: herpers herping.

Post by chad ks »

Here's a post devoted to pictures of our community doing what it does best. Feel free to add your own...unless they are embarrassing pictures of me that is.

kcmatt:

yours truly with Brandon Bowers:
Image
Jim of Herpjournal.com photographing a beautiful MO syspila:

From back to front here we have Socalherper Tony, Yani John and Kcmatt hustling back to the car before I left them all to survive in the wilds of KS...
Image
Yani again (the Ace Ventura edition):
Image
No one has ever told my good buddy Jeremiah that wine and herps don't mix...because such a statement would surely be a lie!
Image
Here we have Matt Cage, HerpNinja Dan Krull, some innocent bystander and Court Gaverth, we tried but failed to find an eastern hognose...
Image

Here's my old roomate and very good friend Mike Rochford sawing logs one morning on the AZ/Mexico border...
Image

He looked way too comfortable so I threw sand on him to wake him up and this is how he responded...
Image

Here's part of our group: Mike, Ginny, Matt and Maria:
Image
...and here's the rest of our group, the one man herping army known as Chip Cochran:
Image

This is one of my favorite herper-group shots that I've ever participated in. Our group was amazing and the amount of fun I had on this trip was immeasurable...
Image

Those of you who were around back in the kingsnake field collecting forum days might remember my good buddy Brandon Decavele, here he is:
Image
Image

Here's a recent one, this group is seriously fun to herp with (l>r: Don, Justin, Mike, Peter, me and Paul Ingram):
Image

Here's a great man, Young Cage of AZ:
Image
This is lizardman AKA Ryan Shofner trying his best to take a better picture then me, he succeeded!

Making this post has really stirred some positive memories for me so I'd like to close with some pics of the KS herping "family":

Joe Collins and Mike Rochford:

Curtis Schmidt:

Ginny looking cute with me in the background:

I have lotsa more, maybe I'll post them another time. I hope that you enjoyed this pictorial. I have made some wonderful friendships due to this website and I sincerely wish to express my thanks, that's the purpose of this post. Feel free to contribute. :)

I couldn't forget Jordan, who is about to marry Jamie. Kevin Jackson is the herper to the right, another friend...

There's a lot of herping talent in this pic, Dan, Dell, Cole, Tim and his g/f and your truly...

I have some of my best memories with this group:

Scott, somehow we made it away from that trip without a pic of you and I. If there was one, it would have been included!

I unfortunately don't take many people pictures. I need to start but here are a couple of the people I have done the most herping with.

Here is one of Jason Folt, back in 05 and the floppy hair days. The next picture is me really needing a shave. This was when both of us were just really starting to figure out this herping thing. We are holding an average sized Eastern Fox Snake and a HUGE Eastern Garter Snake from the Lake Erie islands.
Image

Image

Here is one from 2008 with Jason Folt, Carl Brune and Dean A...(remember The Unknown Herper and his impossible to spell last name?). Carl is stylin' in this picture.
We are looking at an Eastern Tiger Salamander.
Image

Me being stupid with a bunch of Lake Erie Water Snakes and an Eastern Fox Snake.
Image

Me with a Common Snapping Turtle from my parents backyard. Mostly added because I look somewhat normal in this picture.

I herp with one person mostly. Probably 30 days to each one I spend afield with others. His name is Josef and most times, if I'm not solo, it's because he's along. He has only 3 snakes in extreme south Florida where we live to have lifered them all. Indigo, Tantilla oolitica and Keys Ring neck. A tall order to be sure, but I don't doubt he will accomplish it.
He'll be 10 years old this August. Some of you fellow herpers down here may even recognize him...

This is the snake that started it all...Nerodia of course. 8/13/2007
Image

And his most recent lifer. South Florida swamp snake. 5/10/10
Image

Here's some fodder of him in action to fill in the gap.

Since I'm almost always either solo, or with Josef, pics of me herping are few and far between. Here are the only 2 in existance that I personally know of...

Making the grab on a False Cat Eye somewhere in Southwest Mex. I missed; it wouldve been a lifer.

Image

Me with some guy named Frank. (He's running the skiff) We went out to a Barrier Island on a hunch it might have a small population of EDB's. I've not herped with him since.

Wow Tim, great pics. Where did your herpin buddy get that jacket with the built in mosquito net? I'd love to get something like that.

In keeping with the theme. Here's one of Josh Holbrook and myself from like 4 years ago. It's a little off kilter because I think we just set the camera on a stump or something and used the timer.

Jason, it's called "Original Bug Shirt" (Elite edition.) I'm sure you can find them on line...I'm about ready for a couple more myself. (You can see the duct tape patching the rips on Josef's). Even so, They last me more than a year, which tells me normal people will get AT LEAST 5 years out of one...barring stupid stunts involving razor wire, of course.
Great product. I live all summer/fall in them.

Great thread, Chad. I'll have to throw some up myself... but I may have to break your rule of not embarrassing you, haha.

My biggest regret that I'm only now starting to realize is that I never take pics of people when I road cruise with them down here. And since that seems to be about the only herping I've been doing lately... I am missing pics of a lot of good people I've met lately! Sorry to all of you! I'll have to do better in the future. But here are some mostly from areas where it's more fun to hike around in search of herps...

Might as well start with the best friends, Ginny and Chad circa 2005.
Image

Ross on one of our early Florida trips.
Image

Chad and Matt J. taking pics of a rough green snake back in Kansas.
Image

Chad, Matt N., and Ginny in Portal, AZ.

And Ryan with a croc from Belize.
Image

...with Nigel Marven after filming for the PBS python show.
Image

Joe Collins staring down a couple viridis on a KHS field trip.
Image

Alex Pyron only a couple years before publishing some pretty major papers.
Image

Some of you may remember John Stoklosa from wayyyyyyyyy back in the day. If any of you still see him, please tell that bastard to call me.
Image

Travis Taggart on St. Vincent Island long before the BP oil spill threatened the gulf.
Image

Matt Jeppson examining a Gambelia near Palm Springs.
Image

And another salute to the man who started this thread.
Image

A tribute to much of the crew from work (and my dog).
Image

Some guys enjoying a "pucha de Coronas" south of the border.
Image

One of many new friends we met down there.
Image

Jacobo, Brendan, Rich, and I enjoyed some tacos before a week of good herping.
Image

Joe and Suzanne Collins, John, Pierson Hill, Jerry Collins, Me, Maria, Matt, and Ginny in the FL panhandle.
Image

A whole bunch of us at a KHS meeting with keynote speaker Jonathan Campbell.
Image

Walt Meshaka, Jonathan Campbell, Curtis Schmidt, and I at a KHS meeting.
Image

A horridus haunt.
Image

Chip Cochran, star of the tongs.com brochure and "Venom in Vegas", recording data on a cerastes we found in AZ.
Image

Chad, Rusty, Jordan, and I looking under a rock that had a timber rattlesnake and red milk snake.
Image

A nice group shot taken by Mike Cravens in the vicinity of Snake Road.
Image

Joe Collins, John Stoklosa, Me, Alex Pyron, and Ginny Weatherman admiring one of many pygmy rattlesnakes found on one of many trips to Florida.
Image

Matt J., Ginny, Me, and Chad in Anza-Borrego... 2005.
Image

And I'll end with the full pic of my former avatar. In case anyone was wondering the source of the brown substance.... it was merely cake frosting. Sometimes entertaining kids at summer camp means being the biggest kid there.

I really enjoyed viewing this thread and I wish I could spend more time with all of you as you constantly make me jealous from other parts of the country/world.

Edit: I apologize in advance. This is how you overdo it.

What a great thread... I'm just gonna go through my photobucket account and put up pics, so excuse the lack of organization and the million pics, but in the spirit of starting over, now I can come here and find all my favorite herper pics in one spot.

Awesome posts folks.

Kent- I loved your set particularly! It seems like almost any picture of BillBoard has the potential to make me chuckle- and seeing Brian (Fundad) with a group of herpers captivated by whatever he's saying really makes me smile, that guy should be listened to by even the most seasoned herper! Thanks...

This is one of the most awesome threads of all time, Chad! Wish I'd seen it before I posted viewtopic.php?f=2&t=285 , as that really best belongs as an entry here. I'll have to scrounge around and see what other people pictures I have...

I have some pictures of the Herp Ninja finding herps, but they all contain partial nudity ("plumber's crack"). Dan apparently likes the hip-huggers.
