Mammal Forum!
How does that happen? There was an invertebrate forum after a post like this, so I guess it could work. Otherwise, this thing could end up in the board line. I have at least 5 months of different species of mammals if it's one a day.

That weasel swimming was pretty cool. I've never seen that before even on video.

Josh, I hate to admit it, but I had to look that one up. I guess I'm going to have to make it to southern South America one of these days.

Is the mystery animal a Mara?

Great photos on here. I was trying grade them by how pleased I would have been to have made the sighting. The Killer Whale was way out there ... until the Jaguar shot - amazing.

Bingo. It's that rabbit/guinnea pig looking mix known as the Chacoan Mara.

Here's another South American mammal for you Curtis - sometimes those mammals just wont stay still, so extreme measures are required for a good photo: Image

PS
That's just the way Tamanduas hunt, Josh.
They pretend to be road kill, till unsuspecting vultures (or naturalists) get close, then they grab the prey by the neck and crush it in their gaping jaws.

Josh, it is a Tamandua. Unfortunately, the only way I have ever seen one was DOR like that, but mine was in a town right next to a bus stop with 20 people waiting for the bus.

Me too. We were going to go to a place last time I was in Paraguay where Giant Anteaters are dirt common (2-3 see per day) but my car broke down :-/ Ahh well, next time.

I guess since mine was in Costa Rica, it would have been the Mexican or Northern species. Regardless it was dead...

Also, I can include your Babirusa in the top mammals from this thread. I remember that post awhile back. Jealous!

Thanks, if there ever is a mammal forum, Sulawesi is one of the first posts I'll do. Also, are those Little Browns still using that bat house? I hear that is one of the hardest hit by White-nosed Syndrome and may not be around that much longer.

We'll find out this spring. White-nose Syndrome was found in Ohio I think last year (maybe the year before) but at the opposite end of the state from me. This past winter it has been confirmed in most of my surrounding counties...

We need some common snake food to balance off all the awesomeness, so here's a gerbil (greater Egyptian).

... Another reason for this somewhat mundane choice is that I rarely get any pictures of mammals (and never any of the really cool stuff). Most of the mammal pics I do have look like the one below (sorry for breaking the 1 photo rule).

Josh's mara was easy (and guessed earlier, since Patagonian cavy is just another name for the same species). Now try naming the species in this shot ;)

I was lucky. I saw it bounding through the grass (I was above it across the bank of a broad stream) and pulled my camera out to try to get a picture. I missed the pic twice on land, but then it decided to move towards the stream and I got two pictures easily in the stream. It was such a wide stream that I had time to switch to video and get those five seconds as well. A man with a dog was walking in the weasel's general direction about 80-100 yards away - I wondered if it saw/scented them and decided to flee across water.

That's just lovely. I saw my first last year while road cruising as it bounded along the road like a playful puppy. Heartbreakingly, it was roadkill by the time I passed through the next morning.

I think the only problem with a mammal forum on here would be that it would be insanely popular. Unlike birds, fish and invertebrates, there are no good mammal forums out there, so everyone that was interested would come to this one.

I am all for it. Or I should just learn how to make my own website and forum and do it myself...

I firmly believe that people who enjoy herps are far more open minded and have a broader interest range than individuals who are preferential to other classes of fauna. Just go to another forum such as one that is predominantly about a mammal species and you probably won't find herps as regularly as you would mammals here.

I've stopped going in caves because of this. I hope it's cause is found soon. I'd hate to lose the very healthy bat population near me.

I'd join and post on a mammal forum :thumb: But admittedly a subforum on FHF would be pretty convenient and maybe convert some mam-enthusaists to herps ;-)

This is how I feel about it as well. I would certainly frequent Andy's site, however, I would like to tap into the vast knowledge of mammal sightings from herpers.

Josh, what species is that Paraguayan 'dillo?
Most of the species are pretty harmless - the nine-bandeds don't hurt a bit, but can be difficult to get a hold of.

That species is a 3-bander - one of about 13 species in Paraguay - http://www.faunaparaguay.com/tolypeutesmatacus.html

Are you sure on that ID, Andy? The animal in your picture looks more like a mink to me, and the setting seems more like where one would encounter a mink, too. A least weasel's eyes and ears should look larger, as in stlouisdude's picture:

While admittedly a somewhat unspectacular representative I don't think we've seen any members of Insectivora yet so here's a northern white-breasted hedgehog:
