Horry Co. SC 3/31/12

Post by Don »

Two friends from the Charlotte area came to town to look for snakes. Accompanied by the Canebrake Cowboy, and ravaged by intermittent rain and constant mosquitos, we flipped a/c from 8:30 am til 1pm. Not a bad day, considering.....4 copperheads, 3 mambas, 2 chicken snakes, 3 ringers, a juvie box turtle, a quantity of skinks and slimy snotlizards. Here's the brain trust extracting a chicken snake from the ribs of a car hood.

And a harsh warning to those who may remove a/c (and there are apparently a bunch of 'em)!

Looks like an awesome time! Query: What is meant by mamba? Racers?

looks like a good day. I'll be in Horry Co. on Wed. for almost a week, looking forward to it. Funny you always post copperheads from there, I have yet to see one there.

I think I recognize one of your buddies.

You should have seen the copper I turned up a few weeks ago. I thought I was looking at a canebrake at first glance. It was huge.

Tamara: yep, mamba is our feeble attempt to glamorize racers.

Fox Cove 4: one of these times we need to hook up. I can't guarantee you a copperhead, but they're not exactly scarce.

Mike: you would likely know Steve Hughes via the Messenger clan. He was herping with Bob before Kevin joined the team. I'd love to see a photo of the big copperhead!

I love it. I'm adopting the term.

They're also referred to as indigos on occasion...as long as you're in SC.

And yes, Don, you've got it. Wish I could share a picture of that monster, but I was on an all-day blitz (not bioblitz) to try to wrangle as much as possible. It was a bit on the thin side, anyway, I get sad taking photos of sickly snakes. But it was likely the largest I've ever seen. I wish we hadn't run out of time to process all of the captures so I could at least tell you how long it was.

So which snake species would you consider rare finds up there? In other words, which ones do you find in your area once in a blue moon or haven't seen in many years? Just curious.

Pines are hard to come by. Ditto mole kings, although Jamie found a shed last week in an area that's known for pines, too. . . . we'll be spending more time in that neighborhood! Only found 2 Rhadinea in forty years. Never found an EDB, although I know of a DOR last year in Georgetown Co. Corals? Fuggedaboutit.

My sister lives in North Myrtle Beach. Been debating spending some time down there. Looks like there are quite a few nice areas.
