Last month we had a late winter storm. Snow covered the mountains across the valley from our place....
We didn't realize how many new herps we'd be seeing this month. First up was a trip to Yuma where Cody Hurlock showed us around and some cool herps too....
About a week ago Cody and I met up with Ben and Josh Jones and got a couple lifers and had a good time. Here's an Arizona night lizard, one of many seen...
We also saw several Gilbert's skinks, including this lifer juve for me....
Of course, there were lots of common lizards and this canyon treefrog made an appearance...
Cody and I cruised a few things later, including this mojave rattler...
Next day we went mountain climbing in La Paz County and found a couple striped whipsnakes and gopher snakes. Here's Cody and Brandon La Forest with a whip....
Things haven't been too bad at home either. On the same day this week I found this juvenile regal horned lizard in the yard with a number of other lizards...
As I was gathering up my tools to head inside this monster came cruising by....
Earlier I had seen a quail nest in the wash out front. It was full of unbroken eggs. A couple hours after seeing the gila I checked the nest again and found this....
I've found six lizard species in the yard, so far, and one gopher snake.
More later, I'm sure. Stuff should be moving this weekend....

Saturday, April 14th, 2012, 7:45 a.m. It's raining and cold in the Santa Cruz Valley. Tomorrow and Monday should be good for herping. Get out early and often and good hunting!
PS: Don't forget to do your taxes....ahaha!

Another of the lizards seen in on our property is the desert spiny lizard. Here's a young one trying to get a perch on a stump in the backyard....
The gila I saw in the front yard three days ago was moving quickly, heading for the big wash, where there's lots of vegetation. It was hard to get pics of such a quick target. This was one of the last when it was in amongst some trees and brush....
That was three days ago. This morning we got a nice rain in Green Valley. This afternoon we can see the mountains are covered in snow again. I also heard the Catalinas in Tucson are snow covered. Sabino Canyon might be good herping tomorrow morning and Monday.

Thanks! A lifetime of hard work and saving by both my wife and me and we invested it all in one acre and an old house here in Green Valley, so we could retire in an awesome area with a fabulous climate. I plan to spend the rest of my life exploring and learning about Arizona and surrounding states and Mexico.
