April Species Counts
Please use this thread to record all species observed or heard in the field during the month of April.
This is to be used as a general list and no photos should be included here. Save the photos for your topics, and more importantly for your database entries.
*REMEMBER: It is our duty as members of N.A.F.H.A. to record all of our finds at http://www.naherp.com.
Be as specific as you feel you need to be in these lists, but please do not be more detailed with specific locales than a county.
When entering your records in the database, the quantity should match the number depicted in the photos.
Thanks

There is an isolated population of Northern Red Bellied Cooters in Plymouth Co, MA that has been established at least for several thousand years (therehave been theories that native americans introduced them ...) ... it is not unreasonable to think the same exists on LI.John Vanek wrote:No one is sure. They are considered introduced, but again, no one is sure.

Re: April Species Counts
04/17/2012 Hitting 80 degrees by the time I left to go home; a nice day off with lots of success.
Explored 2 new locations I've never been to before.
Middlesex County, CT
TMTC Eastern Painters
Numerous American Toads calling
1 Northern Water Snake
1 Eastern Garter Snake
2 Red-Spotted Newts (first time I've seen this species)
New Haven County, CT (a vernal pool complex)
All but 2 of the pools were dried out. 90% of what I found was in one of the pools, which was the larger, deeper pool.
TMTC near hatched spotted salamander egg masses
TMTC wood frog tadpoles (thousands, literally)
TMTC Green Frogs
5 Spotted Turtles (3 basking on logs, 2 basking with carapace showing on top of water vegetation)
1 Northern Water Snake
1 Black Racer? (Slithered away too quickly for me to be able to verify the species)
There is a permanent pond within this vernal pool complex where I imagine is where the spotted turtle hibernacula is.
In that pond:
TMTC Green Frogs
3 Painted Turtles
2 Unverified salamander larvae

4/18/2012 63 degrees
New Haven County, CT
Went back to the Vernal Pools location
What I saw yesterday is now confirmed:
2 Black Racers, had smooth scales (not keen on Racer behavior but they were wrapped around each other; most likely mating. As they unwrapped,
I went in for a closer look and the infamous faux rattlesnake rattle sound could be heard. The sound is very interesting. To the ignorant individual, the sound is indifferent than that of a rattler. They made a very good impression. I tried to grab one as it slithered away, but it lashed out violently, so I stopped.)
