Are you freaking kidding me?

Post by Berkeley Boone »

This will probably need to be moved, since it is 'news'...... Cayrip posted this on his Facebook page and I thought I would share it here.

The ridiculousness never ends.

This was posted on Fark.com a few days ago, and it was amazing how many idiots claimed to be "experts" yet identified it as a python at least 9 feet in length.

People are stupid.

This! The amazing thing is how many people can't just admit that they know nothing about a topic, instead they know that it is a python!

I personally like this one--"WSB-TV reports that poisonous snakes have already attacked more than 100 people in metro Atlanta". http://onlineathens.com/local-news/2012 ... se-georgia

I doubt there are 100 snakes left in metro Atlanta except for Dekay's snakes.

This is what I sent them:

Hello,

I recently saw your article about the large snake found in a residential area in Columbia, Missouri. As a long time snake lover, I can tell you with 100% certainty that is is indeed a harmless Black Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoleta). They are capable of reaching 7-8 feet in length, but this would be a very large specimen. Lengths of 4-5 feet are much more common. In the main photo that is shown, it shows the snake climbing a tree with a shed in the background. From this angle, it makes the snake seem to be as tall as the shed, which may be 15-20 feet tall. But, it is not possible to determine how far the tree is from the shed from the photo. In your article you also mentioned that Mr. Philson was worried about the small children around his house. He has nothing to worry about. Although Black Rat snakes do kill their prey by constriction, they don't have the strength nor the will to suffocate a human. Their typical prey is small rodents, as their name suggests. it would actually benefit Mr. Philson to have this snake near his home, as it would prey upon any pest animals that could be near his home. Removal of the snake would cause the rodent population to dramatically increase. Not to mention, those pest animals could be be carrying diseases, and thus would be much more threatening to small children than the snake would be. I understand that most people are disturbed by the fact their is a large snake near their homes, but in truth they are just trying to survive like any other wild animal. I commend Mr. Philson for wanting to relocate the snake instead of killing it immediately. However, snake locations rarely work out well for the snake, when they are taken into unfamiliar territory they often wander aimlessly and either starve or are quickly predated upon. Plus, it is unlikely the snake will stay around long as it is mating season for them right now, and they will wander a little farther from their home ranges in search of a mate.

Sorry for being long winded, but I hope you will take some of my words into consideration before publishing another article about the black rat snake in Columbia. Thank you for your time.

Sincerly,

Nice letter Zach. Thanks for sending that over to them.

Cameron, I couldn't even post that I was laughing so hard when I read that article. Apparently it was a slow newsday here in Athens.....

John, thanks for posting the body of the article here. Didn't think to do that!

Justin, you trip me out. :)

Van and Andrew- I agree completely. I usually don't even read the comments after online newspaper articles anymore because I am tired of reading what all the 'experts' have to say.

Gerry- Thanks for bringing that up. I don't visit the news section all that often, so I figured others might not as well. I'm glad that KingCam posted it over there.

Ah, but you should, Berkeley! Lots of interesting stuff appears there (without appearing here). I'm glad both of you thought to bring this fun item to our attention, anyway... ;)

Since the slide show has a geo-reference-able location and the images are identifiable, someone should enter this into the DB ...

You're right, Gerry! I've been working on trying to get over to the News section more frequently. There are some interesting articles that have appeared there.

Funky, good point.....
