They seem near impossible to find. Are they rare?

No they are not rare, just hard to find.. You really don't go out to find lyres much, they just find you..

Spend time in their habitat, and you'll soon see one..

Nothing else to add here, except that Fundad's absolutely right. After 2-3 years of searching and finding only DOR Lyres, saw my first 2 live @ last years ARC cruisin & walkin the rocks w/ Danny (Speckled Rosy) & Judson (Isaac Duran... there when I saw the 2nd one found by Danny). Unforgetable experience! Keep hunting and keep your eyes open.
Longnose snakes can be quite prolific in their territory. I find them now alot when I'm looking for something else. Happy herping.

I want a lyre; and I want it now!!!
Oh wait;
I just saw one .
Hazpat has seen over 20 this season, all as he has been out searching for a more elusive creature.
Brian,
I know of a spot or two where one can target lyres; and I'm sure you do also.
Well keep those to ourselves though.

Sorry I missed you guys in Az; I had a nice non Herping weekend with my family though.

If your already finding boas, you don't need to change anything.. You'll eventually find one.

Dumb question - is Lyre pronounced like liar?

I've always assumed it was, but I can't recall ever hearing a bonafide herpetologist pronounce it.

It's named for the pattern on it's head/neck... which resembles the ancient Greek stringed instrument called a Lyre... so... however that's pronounced... it all greek to me... :D jim

Lyres like the same habitat as rosy boas. You can find them in rock cracks during the early season, now night driving is your best bet. I would start with localityrosys.com and if you look in those places enough you should eventually find one. Good luck.

Just put in the time in the evening this time of year. Look in those cracks. When it get's even hotter you can road cruise one.

Fundads right they usually find you...

This one found me.

If you think hiking up the hillsides, looking in countless cracks is easier than sitting in your car, sipping soda and listening to music...

Not saying you can't find a lyre in a crack at this time of year, but for the most part, snakes have dispersed all over the place.

I've also found them walking trails in the evening through very rocky habitat.

Both of the lyres I found were while road-cruising rocky canyons. One of them was the only snake I saw that night, and actually the only snake I've ever seen on that road during two nights cruising it.

I'd really love to find one in a crack some day.

I agree with Fundad Jim, true low des is harder to find stuff than the high des of cali. I spend a lot of time in the low des and don't find much. The other night was my first night all year in the high des and one of the snakes was a trimorph.

When I said low-desert... I basically meant PS area... as in the 'down the hill deserts' What do you guys mean by 'true' low desert... Imperial Co? Remind me not to go...
Mojave's OK.. but there definently more productive deserts around...
Jeff... was your trimorph kinda on the way down to the Mojave? friend of mine's found 2 DOR's in the exact same spot, a year apart. jim

One night, in the PS area... I cruised 17 adult glossys... saw like 30 snakes that night. Probably the most snakes in one night in the Mojave was with you, Brian... what did we see... 12 snakes, 7 Ssps?
you can see bout all the same stuff in the Mojave... just not as much... unless you know exactly where to go and when. get it wrong... pretty easy to get skunked... PS area... hard NOT to see something...   jim

What I am "trying" to tell you is thats NOT total/true desert out there..

BTW best boa nights come from the Mojave, and you can have some truly epic nights/days up there, which is next to impossible in the true low desert..

Field notes he is in Temecula and on the date he posted it had been a cool week. I live in So Cal. and I am familiar with his area. I posted in the now, realtime, current conditions.

It seems as though repapin needs to get out there and figure things out himself.

Lyres are not tough to find you live in a place where they are prevelant.

check out Fieldnotes website it has some great info.

One of the things that Bill and I (and other successful herpers)have in common is we both bust are rear ends in the field...

Nothing is easy and there are no MAGIC bullets.. Effort Effort Effort is the only thing brings
results...

Bill and I usually turn more rock, boards, etc then even rookies (we also put them back GOOD). We hike to the top of the hill, we go over the next ridge, We hit one more spot, we start the day early and end it late.. We don't take no as an answer willingly, without a fight..

HUNTING HARD IS THE KEY TO FINDING YOUR TARGETS.

Fundad

PS of all the advice and help I have EVER given, the above is the best of it..

Fundad once told me not to tell anybody anything; about finding snakes. Because when you do, it almost always comes back to bite you. Remember that Brian? The thing is, I know both of us are still teaching people. The key is to be selective with who you help. Private messages with a few pointers seem like the best way to go. Please people, do not name spots or roads on the world wide web. It IS a small world after all.........

Did you guys feel the quake?

I missed it.
