Some finds from the last year or so. (Lots of pics)

Post by Shaun Vought »

I’ve decided to post a few pictures from some excursions I’ve taken the last year or so. Despite me not being a very good “picture taker” I enjoy finding and photographing pretty much any herp I come across. I had a lot of fun in the process of taking these pictures and hope you enjoy them as well.

Gray Treefrog

Canyon Treefrogs (Hyla arenicolor)

Image

Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina serpentina)
Image

I lifted a rock to see this sight: A large centipede eating a Prairie Ringneck Snake
Image

This is a common sight in some areas across the Midwest.
Prairie Ringneck Snakes (Diadophis punctatus arnyi)

Here is a unique Red Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum syspila)

A more traditional Red Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum syspila)
Image

Bullsnake (Pituophis melanoleucus sayi)

Central Plains Milk Snake (Lampropeltis triangulum gentilis)

Flipped this one under a rock:

Rubber Boa (Charina bottae)

Utah Mountain Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis pyromelana infralabialis)

Image

Western Ground Snakes (Sonora semiannulata) - (there were 13 under the piece of AC but by the time I took the picture several had scattered)

A closer look at one of them:

A different phase:

Brown Vine Snake (Oxybelis aeneus)

Same snake, different view:

And another nocturnal lizard:

Northern Casque-headed Frog (Pternohyla fodiens)

If you made it this far then I appreciate your endurance and hope that you don't feel it was a waste of your time. I had so many pictures that I'm going to put up another post with just venomous herps.

Excellent finds! That Utah pyro is amazing to say the least. Great looking zonata as well. Very impressed with that shot of the centipede eating that ring neck.

Shaun,
That new snake detector kit you ordered on-line last year is really working for you. And for the record, you must have an awesome camera, because your photos are outstanding for a novice "picture taker". I'd like to meet you and go snake-hunting some time. I know you like your privacy and stay fairly reclusive, so I hope you don't mind that I took the liberty to enlarge the eye of the frog in one of the photos you posted here, so that I could see what you look like in the reflection.

Now I know who to look for:
Image
You obviously get really excited when you see a herp!!! I'm diggin' the passion brother!

Very nice recap Shaun!
Very cool shot of the gentilis on the road. I'm guessing it wasn't in a hurry?
The vine was also very cool.
I look forward to the next installment.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments.

Wayne- The insitu milk was found about a half hour after dark.

crotalus- Thanks for the Xantusia correction.

Jamison- You're gay! No offense intended for any other "snake lovers" out there.

Brian E.- The gentilis was just laying there and not in a hurry at all. I saw another one a little later and it was in a very big hurry.

Its about time you posted some of these. The casque headed and sonoran green are animals I would like to see sometime. Was the first taylori from an eastern locality?

Top notch stuff. Especially like the gaping smooth green and that second Cal King (by Brian Eagar) is one heck of a specimen.

Very nice! (Those ground snakes are insane.) And the Ringer and Centipede pic gave me the same involuntary shutter I normally reserve for large, hairy Arachnid macros. thanks for sharing.

Hard not to like those eye candy utah pyros.
Glad we ran into you guys down on the border.
Heard you guys found a ringneck that night on the road?
