Two Greater Green Snakes (Cyclophiops major)

Post by Hans Breuer (twoton) »

The other day I caught two Greater Green Snakes (Cylophiops major) during my daily patrol, an adult and a juvenile. As I understand, these animals are the Asian analog of the North American Smooth Snakes and Rough Snakes - diurnal invertebrate eaters that dazzle humans with their docility. Actually, I've been bitten by this species before, but I guess every town has its crazies

Here's the little one. The juveniles always seem to have a greyish tint on their scales, while the adults display the classic saturated green they're famous for.

And here's the adult. These pictures were taken in various locations: on a marble picnic table at dusk, in the holding tank I have reserved for overnight guests such as these guys, and finally on our glass-top dinner table. I'm still searching for the perfect background :-)

Amazing how much the little ones resemble our smooth greens. Beautiful blue interstitial coloration on the adults. Neat eyes, too. By the way, the HN mag article you co-authored was terrific!

Great close-ups Hans. I really like the clean backgrounds.

I'd say this one is the snake version of "The Thinker".
