Re: What was your last lifer?...
I got a weak lifer yesterday (May 12) with an Acadian Flycatcher. They breed at my nature center, but I have never taken the time, until this spring, to learn their calls, which is more or less the only way to safely ID them from some other flycatchers.
Re: What was your last lifer?...
Blue Grosbeak, two days in a row...probably not uncommon to many of you, but an excitng and spectacular find here in the low desert. I see lazuli buntings and western tanagers in the same area, real gems in this stark desert locale, and only very temporary spring migrants. Vic

And today, the day after the phalarope, in the same place as the phalarope, I got a my lifer Snowy Plover.
Re: What was your last lifer?...
In our trip to Curacao and Bonaire, I got a few lifers
White-cheeked Pintail
Caribbean Coot
Scaly-naped Pigeon
Bare-eyed Pigeon
Brown-throated Parakeet
Yellow-shouldered Parrot
Ruby-topaz Hummingbird
Blue-tailed Emerald
Northern Scrub-Flycatcher
Pearly-eyed Thrasher
Black-faced Grassquit
Saffron Finch
Carib Grackle
Venezuelan Troupial
Yellow Oriole
and now there is a Black-tailed Godwit just a few hours east of me in Brazoria County. Wouldn't be a lifer, but new US bird. May have to make a run on Friday.

Re: What was your last lifer?...
I think I lost a post in the mini-crash.
Recently, I have been focusing on seeing those species regularily occuring in Ohio that I have never seen, some of which are embarassing holes in the list.
So in the past couple of weeks, in Ohio, I have lifered:
Marbled Godwit
Stilt Sandpiper
Buff-breasted Sandpiper
Red-necked Phalarope

Re: What was your last lifer?...
Chris,
Thanks. In 2010 when I only saw 1 life bird total I decided I needed to make an effort to see those species that actually occur in Ohio on a regular basis. My initial list was about 42 birds (not too bad if you ask me). At this point between 2011 and 2012 I was able to knock off 12 species, all but 2 of which were seen in Ohio. This summer shorebirds has been my biggest targets. I think I can realistically get an additional 7-9 species ticked before 2013.

Hahaha! Clever, Chris!
In that case I just got a new herp lifer in Costa Rica, but unfortunately I now need to remove Dendrophidion vinitor from my life list, which is odd, because until last month I had seen like 100 of them...

Re: What was your last lifer?...
Pete, very cool on the Northern Lapwing. I was in Germany this year and figured those things would be like Killdeer here, namely a gimme bird. I never saw a one...
But, today I did see my lifer Lapland Longspurs. Not the greatest of views, but good enough for ID purposes. Next up, winter finches, with an emphasis on Red Crossbills and Evening Grosbeaks.

Vesper Sparrow
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Red-necked Grebe - an out of place individual in the middle of Tallahassee. It's only the 2nd recorded occurrence in Florida, but I didn't make that record.

Re: What was your last lifer?...
Interesting that it was a Cliff Swallow. Here in the states most of the swallows (at least for us in the northern climes) have headed south, but now in November one of the southern swallows erratically shows up all over the north, the Cave Swallow (looks very much like a Cliff). I would almost expect a Cave to be more likely this time of year in Europe than a Cliff.Freddy81 wrote:We in Sweden did have new bird for the country yesterday....and I was at the right place at the right time for the bird...it was nr 299 in Sweden for me.....American Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota)

Everyone in Sweden was so happy. Because the Cliff Swallow is a super rare bird in whole of Europe....but you can check this webpage. http://www.artportalen.se/birds/todays.asp where you can see whats is seen in Sweden. I´m happy and I did get a bad photo of that amazing bird.

My presumably last lifer of 2012 - a small group 3-4 of Long-eared Owls.
That brings my total lifers seen in Ohio this year to 16. Not too shabby. Only a few more regular species to go before I am just pickin' off accidentials in the state.
