iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
There is an issue with HERP Mobile on iOS 6, that causes it to not list pending records. The records appear to be saved on the phone fine, they are just not being listed properly to view them and sync them. I thought my phone was a 3GS, so I could update to iOS 6 to look more into it to fix the bug, but it's only a 3G. Does anyone have an old 3GS or later that they don't use any longer and want to donate to development?
Total received so far: $225
We have reached the total needed. Please, no more donations.

I might have an old one. I won't be able to check until I'm back in my office on Tuesday. If you don't have any donations, I'll check then.

Thanks for working on this Don. I don't have a retired iPhone, but I do have a 4th generation iPod Touch you could borrow...

brick, let me know what model it is.
Ryan, I am a bit leary of borrowing a phone for development. I have heard of people having issues with phones after they have used them for development. Your license agreements change, and it conflicts with certain things you can do. I only read briefly about it a couple years back, so I will need to look more into it to be sure.

This is a great opportunity for our membership to come together and provide Don with something he needs. Don has indicated that he doesn't want $$ for the services he provides but maybe "we" can come together and get him a newer device to run iOS 6 (it is for our benefit after all).
Anyone...?
Thanks!

or a great time to tell Apple to go F themselves for not providing a devel emulator like Android doesChris Smith wrote:This is a great opportunity for our membership to come together and provide Don with something he needs. OK maybe not - but they are seriously pissing me off with some web dev issues, where Safari for iOS behaves differently than Safari for Windows and other mobile (android) browsers, and some of the issues are dependent upon which iOS you are running, they basically expect developers to have lots of Apple devices when they could easily provide an emulator that boots any version of the iOS.
I'm sick of Apple, and I use to be a complete maclot.
Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
Dammit Don. I'm sorry - Mine is a 3G.
I hereby commit to donate $20 to whatever Don needs to better our cause. Who has a few extra bucks to throw at this project? Once we get a few commitments, I say we just send it his way and he can do his thing.
...You comfortable with that, Don?

Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
I am willing to take donations for an iPhone. A 3GS is $200 on amazon. My main concern is that everyone will chip in to get a new development phone now, and next year a new iOS update will come out that requires the iPhone 4. This is one of the reasons that as a developer, I hate Apple.
Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
That'a a risk I'll take. If we can get $200 committed, I will send it to you.
iPhone donation commitment: $20 total
...someone add to it!

Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
Ok, I have placed an order for a 3GS. The $70 offered so far will at least off set much of the cost. I have a Prime account, so I should have it tomorrow. If you guys have paypal you can send what ever you want to psyon at psyon.org, and if not, PM me for my address. Thanks for helping with it, and thanks to anyone else who would like to help. Please double check this post, or PM me before sending money, and I will let you know if I have reached the $200 mark.

Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
I will be sending money momentarily!!
Thanks Don!!!
Lets keep the $$ flowing... I do not want Don to pay for any of this phone out of pocket! PayPal Donations to: psyon at psyon.org (Don be sure to keep us posted on the amount you have received, I want to make sure we get you the money).
Be sure to select "Personal" and "Gift" when sending the donation(s). This avoids PayPal fees (there are limitations though). See below:
Receiving a domestic personal payment is free if the sender uses their PayPal balance or their bank as the payment method.

Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
Well... good news and bad news....
The good news is, that I found the bug, and I fixed it. It was an issue with PhoneGap itself, which has been fixed in their 2.1 release. The bad news is that the new release does not work on the iPhone 3G, or similar model iPod Touches. The only solution I have to fix both, is to have two separate versions of the app in the iTunes store. People with the 3G or earlier (and similiar iPods), would have to download a different app from iTunes. Basically, if you can't update to iOS 6, your device would need to use the old version of things. You don't have to actually update to iOS6, just that if your device supports it, it would support the update I would put out, but if your device doesn't support iOS 6, then you would have to get the version I would release. I would still list the app for 3G models and earlier for 99 cents, but could give gift codes for people who have already purchased the app. Also, I need to figure out how to make sure anyone with a 3G knows to sync data first, then add the new app, and also NOT to update to the new one I release. I could make iOS 6 users get the second app, but people have records that are saved, that they are currently unable to sync, and if they uninstall any apps, they will get erased.
Umm... does that make sense to anyone? Because I confused myself too.

Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
I contacted the people who run the PhoneGap Build project, but I am still waiting to hear back from them.
Um... I guess let me clarify. Basically, I would put two apps in the iTunes market. HerpMobile, and HerpMobile3G. HerpMobile is the current app, and would get an update to support iOS6, but would break on iPhone 3G. So, a new app, HerpMobile3G, would be added to iTunes as well for users who still use a 3G or early iPod touches.
People who switch to HerpMobile3G, would need to sync records before removing the existing app and installing the new one.

Re: iOS 6 issue with HERP Mobile
So here is my Game Plan. I am setting up a new app in iTunes, that will be called Herp Mobile 3G. Once it is available for download, then I will send out an email to all registered users informing them of the new app (and it may be the first some have heard about the app at all), and providing them instructions to sync all their current records from the phone, then remove it, and install the new app. I will then give a week for people to do so, and after that I will push the update to fix the iOS 6 issue. If you have iOS 6... DO NOT REMOVE THE APP! Just let it update, or you will lose all your records.

Sounds pretty cut and dry, as far as the end user is concerned.
Thanks, Don.

Of course, we old guys solve problems, not with APPs but Naps.
Any problem I've found - "There's a nap for that!"
