What was your last lifer?
This is a great topic in the birding forum. Why not do it here?
My last lifer was a Cape Grysbok in St Helana's Bay, Western Cape, South Africa. We searched for quite awhile and turned up 10 Steenbok, and 3 Common Duiker, finally when I had given up, a small antelope crossed into a yard. I backed up and there was a male Cape Grysbok. It stepped out of view right as the camera focused.

Re: What was your last lifer?
My last mammal lifer was a Beaver back in 2008. New Haven County, CT.
Re: What was your last lifer?
Probably an Asian Palm Civet in the Philippines last year, right after a Masked Palm Civet in Taiwan.
Despite the similar common names, they are in different genera.

Lesser Egyptian jerboa, Jaculus jaculus, Israel, May 24 2011
Re: What was your last lifer?
Thanks Kris! I guess I saw some of those lifer Murids and Dipodids at the same time as you, but, umm ... they're mice. LBJ's.
Re: What was your last lifer?
We saw plenty of murids that night but I didn't see any dipodids though. This was a couple of nights later.Warren wrote:Thanks Kris! I guess I saw some of those lifer Murids and Dipodids at the same time as you, but, umm ... they're mice. LBJ's.
I saw 19 mammal species in those five days in Israel encompassing felids, canids, mustelids, herpestids, bovids, suids, leporids, rhinolophids, myocastorids, dipodids, murids and cricetids with 14 lifers among them - not bad for a herping trip.
I don't quite consider Jaculus an LBJ but I know what you mean. Come to think of it I should correct myself since Jaculus isn't my latest lifer. That would instead be the pygmy shrew, Sorex minutus. I see shrews regularly and rarely bother to ID them. I've always assumed I must have seen a pygmy shrew at least once or twice but never actually confirmed an ID of one until late September 2011

Just returned from a week in The Gambia, West Africa where I got 13 mammal lifers. Last one was Egyptian Mongoose. Other highlights were Cape Clawless Otter, Maxwell's Duiker and Senegal Bushbaby.

I just saw my first long tailed weasel down here in San Diego. I wasn't even aware that they lived around here. Pretty awesome little creature. I wish I had gotten a picture of it but all I saw was the little guy blitzing across the road.

Re: What was your last lifer?
Long-tailed Porcupine, Trychis fasciculata, last Saturday night. Ran out of the bush into our headlights, did a few confused circles, ran back into the bush. At first we took it for some gigantic rat with an odd tail (naked apart from a paintbrush tuft at the end), but our Borneo mammal field guide taught us otherwise the next day.

Re: What was your last lifer?
Wait, that wasn't the last one, sorry. The last one was a mongoose, last Tuesday morning: The jury is still out on whether it was Herpestes semitorquatus or H. brachyurus. It crossed a small road littered with trash, maybe hunting for rats. Again, no photo

River Otter (Lontra canadensis). They are supposedly common in MN but I had not seen one until fall 2011.
Before that, it was probably a badger (Taxidea taxus).

Re: What was your last lifer?
I started a summer job doing bat surveys. In the first three nights I've seen 5 species, 3 of which were new to me. Northern Myotis, Eastern Small-footed Myotis, and Eastern Red Bat. It's been a great start.

Jon must be good luck. I better stick to herping with him to get my lion shot lol

Black bear yearling walked within 10 yards of me when I was hunting during Spring Gobbler.
Re: What was your last lifer?
My last lifer was the elk when I moved to this area of KY. Before that would have been 2008 when I lived in Mississippi and found my first Armadillo.

I'm pretty sure mine was a porcupine, and prior to that a bunch of cool mammals from Costa Rica, including wild agouti, coati, and a variety of insect and fruit bats. But yea, first live porcupine I've seen (even though I've seen tons of DOR porks before).
Re: What was your last lifer?
Eastern harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys humulis) I fished that little sucker out of my pool.
Re: What was your last lifer?
Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Costa Rica... specifically in Marino Ballena National Park, August 2011. Before that several monkeys in Borneo.
Last US lifer was a Grizzly in August 2010.

Re: What was your last lifer?
Just back from a fantastic two weeks in South Africa seeing well over 60 mammal species of which a third were lifers. Highlights incuded Aardvark, Black-footed Cat, Honey Badger, Serval and Caracal. Last lifer was one of the best - a Wild Dog!
Re: What was your last lifer?
Hmm its tough to remember my last mammal lifer, i don't keep a list but I think my mammal lifers that come to mind this year have been.... starting from the most recent
-prehensile-tailed porcupine, I only saw this guy for about 15 seconds on a whitewater rafting trip. He was in plain view but the raft wasn't about to stop.
-Grison (Galictis vittata)-probably the most exciting mammal lifer in recent memory, saw a pair of these loping along early one morning while I was working. Unfortunately no photos.
-crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus)-really similar to the raccoons we have here in the US but a lifer nevertheless!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26500525@N ... 9117585209
-Hoffmann's two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni)-I have seen lots of 3 toed ones before so finally seeing a 2 toed was exciting.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26500525@N ... 9117585209
-West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus), a very exciting sighting for me, the 1st few times anyways.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26500525@N ... 8557246081
Wow in retrospect that's a pretty sad list for the past 12 months... There were a few that I finally got good looks at these past 12 months but had seen them atleast once before so i wont list those. The year before I racked up a ton more mammal lifers but I won't go into those either.

Re: What was your last lifer?
Just thought I'd add a few pictures from my latest trip to South Africa.
The first is not a lifer for me but it was the first time I've had such great views of a Caracal. Photo taken at Marrick Safari, Kimberley.
The second is a Honey Badger. Even Lions and Leopards give these things a wided berth!
I was lucky enough to see 6 of these in Kruger.
Finally, the Sharpe's Grysbok, also seen in Kruger. This antelope is tiny and especially difficult to find during the daytime.
Thanks for looking.

Re: What was your last lifer?
Wow,, how did I miss this cool thread?
I'm not 100% sure it was my "last" lifer since I saw a bunch of cool mammals in Ecuador last year, but I think this Bulldog Bat (Noctilio sp.) was the last lifer of the trip. I guess it counts even though I'm not sure which species it was.
I got an "almost great" shot of one of them. Too bad camera don't focus in complete darkness.

Not my most recent lifer but I just re-ran across this photo taken in 2011.
MN Black Bear and cub wondering why a crazy white dude is chasing them up a powerline cut with a camera... (I had a few glimpses of her several nights in a row while doing herp survey work but was fortunate to get a good look at her the last morning after pulling turtle traps).

Not too often I get lifer mammals in Ohio, but two within a week is pretty crazy. Anyways, today I got a Woodland Vole at work.
Re: What was your last lifer?
Nathusius' pipistrelle - first hometown lifer in more than a decade.
I've probably seen some before as they're one of the five bat species known from my local neighbourhood. I've just never before been in a position to make a positive ID. Well, last night on my evening walk I ran into a biologist doing a survey of the bat population for the city which gave me the chance to finally tick this species off, last of the five.
Only other mammalian lifer this year was a gray seal. I was on holiday with my wife and kids last month on a small remote Swedish Island in the Baltic archipelago. On the final day we were supposed to go on a seal safari to some smaller islets further out at sea but it was canceled due to a forecast of strong winds. I went hiking instead and ended up spotting one out at sea from the shore
