Could be useful for training hunting dogs. If they wander out of view, you can see what they're interested in and correct it. Other than that, I don't really see a practical use.

They ought to have called it the "Sony AKA-D..Squirrel!!"

When Sony starts making cameras for chickens, I'm getting one. It might be cool to see the world from a chook's point of view. Plus, I like spending money on things for my chooks which have little to no practical utility. Hence the disco ball in their coop.

A setup like this was used on a truffle-dog on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations' Croatia episode. Worked pretty well.
And you know how people are like with their pets. At 50 bucks you'd think that they'll sell quite a few.

I have no doubt they will sell quite a few. Petsmart will probably start carrying them.Martti Niskanen wrote:At 50 bucks you'd think that they'll sell quite a few.
This is more a reflection of a societal pathology than the harness' utility.

Stupid and useless, I'll go along with. But pathological? This is more a reflection of a societal pathology than the harness' utility.
Re: OK, now this is just stupid
Haha they're silly but you could probably get some cool footage with them. Back in the good ole days when I had a dog he would go tearing away after some wild turkeys or something and vanish in the woods, that would be fun footage to watch provided the camera wasn't ripped away by a branch and lost.
Sure its a bit frivolous, but hardly stupid. Just because you don't immediately see a use for it doesn't mean there isn't anything worthwhile that can be done, all someone has to do is be creative with it. Not to say that 99% of the footage most people get using this won't be irritatingly boring.

I don't know about you guys but it put a smile on my face. Just because its not useful for the vast majority of people doesn't mean you can't do fun things with it.

A. thought this was a good idea.
B. was able to convince others that it was good enough to put into production.
C. will buy it.
Re: OK, now this is just stupid
David Letterman did this in the 1980's with his "My Dog Bob" segment with the camera mounted on old Bob. He should sue, but I'm sure NBC owns the 'intelectual property'.
Of course, it would allow my dog to do her own vouchers:

Love it, Owen. Now I'm definitely waiting avidly for Sony to start selling the chicken cam. Penelope wants to do some vouchering, too.

I like it. THere is actually some pretty fun YouTube videos of people who rigged GoPros to their dogs when duck hunting. The swimming also helps keep the camera steady.

I'm amazed at the amount of negative "what's the point?" responses. Where's your curiosity for the natural world? For starters, dogs can go places humans can't - the camera allows us to see those places. Critter cams have been used, by science and entertainment institutions alike, on eagles, whales, seals, and all manner of other animals big and small to show us where and when they do what ... so why would that not be interesting for learning about dog behavior? Let your camera-equipped dog run around all day and then check where he went and what he did? I find that absolutely fascinating.
If I had a free-roaming dog, I'd get one of those puppies. Unfortunately, our four dogs are mostly confined to the yard and only get out on controlled leash walks.
