lots of eggs at my house...
The first clutch:
The parents:
I found the eggs pretty late and only one survived, it hatch on the 11th, it shed its skin 4 days later and took a meal and is ready for another (she just laid four more eggs this morning!):
2nd clutch:
The parents (should be hatching by the end of the month):
3rd clutch:
I picked up the mother and she laid these, here she is (this is the same snake that was eggbound in an earlier post, she is doing fine now):
4th clutch:
I picked up the mother for pictures and noticed she was gravid and she laid these! I returned her to the wild, I know these can be a difficult species, hopefully I can get them feeding, and tips?
5th clutch:
I've wanted to keep this species for a while and finally came across one and couldn't get it to eat. This was the reason. I still can't get her to eat, she laid on the 11th, any tips?

Rhinocheilius can be challenging but rewarding captives IF you can get them on to rodents. Some are easier than others. Have some Utas and Urosaurus and offer them. Use the various scenting tricks, including washing the fuzzy or pinky mouse and rubbing it with live lizard, or lizard flesh, blood, feces. Offer the live lizard on forceps, when snake shows interest, pull it away and replace with scented mouse. Some will refuse domestic mice but ready take wild mice from there habitat. Call me if you need more ideas. I found most converted, but a few were stubborn lizard feeders, so I think keep the easy ones, there will be individual variation.
Save road kill lizards, collect some common species, trap a few wild mice and you will have the tools you need.
In my experience, Rhinos are strongly nocturnal, and fed best at night.
Good luck, Vic

Re: lots of eggs at my house...
Thanks for all the tips guys! I got the ringneck to eat finally. Cruised a black-headed snake and it took it right away! Apparently, it didn't want the blind snake it has been cuddling with for the last couple weeks! Now, to try and switch it to mice...
Re: lots of eggs at my house...
I am also currently working on converting a w/c Long Nosed Snake from a lizard diet to a rodent one (although I feel that a varied diet is best, finding appropriate sized lizards can be difficult for me. I often worry about the high fat content of mammalian prey vs reptile prey for specialized, reptile eating species of snakes).
Upon having the snake in captivity, and after a few meals of frozen-thawed Sceloporus, I first offered:
1. Live pink- No
2. F/T Pink- No
3. F/T Pink scented with A LOT of Scelop blood- YES
4. F/T Pink lightly scented with Scelop blood- No
---wait 2 weeks---
5. Per Kelly's advice, I obtained some Bearded dragon urea. I washed a F/T Pink with Ivory Soap, pat dried the mouse and rolled it around in the urea. Put mouse in the tank and after an hour, it was gone.
Just my simple observations with my Rhino.

Re: lots of eggs at my house...
... thats what you get when you breed promiscuously, lotsa babies :p
id feed em all to the regal and make life alot easier on yourself ... im only 1/2 kidding!
& getting regals to take mice is much tougher than converting nytesnakes, so plan on a long frustrating process, pm me w/ your tele# if you want the details, cuz its alot more involved (& tedious) than just putting lizzy skin on a pinkie, & i dont have time 2 type it all out.

Re: lots of eggs at my house...
The adult kings are as follows:
Female: wild caught near Peach Springs, AZ
Male: was given to me by Bob Myers at the rattlesnake museum. Someone dropped it off at the museum, so I have no idea on him.
The longnose eggs are doing great and should hatch in a month or so.

I didn't take any and actually just found a home for four of them. I'll take some pictures of what's left. (Two gophers and a king)

Re: lots of eggs at my house...
surely they're no worse hatchlings than the stubbornest lizard-eating lampros? I'd just go with all the scent-transfer stuff people are suggesting; actually, in all honesty, I'd probably just feed them lizards if that's what they reeeeaaally want, given where you live (lizard-land)I know these can be a difficult species, hopefully I can get them feeding, and tips?
someone (maybe you?) mentioned lots of scelop blood; that's a good scent - tail blood is great, no need to cut or poke the lizard
I also agree w/ Gunn on feeding the regal - just give it hatchling corns & cal kings. For some good regals, hell, I'd breed corns or house snakes for that purpose and no other.
how's the fam?
cheers,
Jimi
Re: lots of eggs at my house...
Are these the long-nosed snake eggs?
And are these the ring-neck?
Both very cooling clutch!
What an abundance of eggs and baby snakes you must have now.

Re: lots of eggs at my house...
ringnecks hatched out while I was out of town and one desiccated, the other has shed and I am going to try feeding it tonight. I saw a little longnose pipping this afternoon, just waiting for it to come out and see if the others hatch out. They look fine, but I don't count my snakes before they hatch.

The ringnecks are much bigger as hatchlings than I would have guessed, thanks for sharing your neonates.
