Conditions In San Diego
This is how I feel every time I go out during the past few trips. I think I'll stop wasting my time before the next rain comes.

Re: Conditions In San Diego
Too damn dry is right!
It's not only dry in So. Cal. though. I've read a number of recent complaints about the lack of rain in Nor. Cal. too.
I was in the Seattle area last week where it was also somewhat dry. It rained a little bit while I was there at least. Not more than 0.5" in total. It was dry under some of the logs I lifted, but thankfully not all of them.
Seems like the whole West Coast is having a drought year so far. Maybe that just means it will be extra wet in February and March??

We got .02" this morning and .01" yesterday morning up here. Woooo hoo!!!
Re: Conditions In San Diego
There is NO rain in the forecast in the NEXT MONTH for LA..
It's not worth going out, IMO.. So much for my boa mapping project this year.

I flipped a helleri the other day ! LOL
Re: Conditions In San Diego
Helleri are dumb, they don't count.
I should have said for ME it's not worth the effort, time, and money to go out much.

Re: Conditions In San Diego
I'm thinking of starting a rain dance thread... where we all do our best rain dances, and post vids of us doing them.
As our leader Fundad... you should start us off...
Hey... if nothing else, we have something to laugh about, in these tough conditions... jim
Edit... we could make it a contest... then Hubbs will post like 40 dances...

Re: Conditions In San Diego
Well I was looking for manders so I wasn't expecting it he was under a 4x8 on a north facing slope under a oak tree , go figure. But I did get my target black bellys , some gators and a skink, soooo not to shabby considering the dry conditions. However I have never put so much time and effort into finding slender salamanders!!Fundad wrote:Helleri are dumb, they don't count.

Excerpt from the "Discussion of the Seasonal Drought Outlook published by the NWS":
"From central and southern sections of the Rockies westward through most of the Intermountain West and the West Coast, light to moderate precipitation is forecast for the first 7 days of the period, followed by enhanced chances for below-normal precipitation during the ensuing week. For January, below-normal precipitation is favored from central and southern California southeastward into northeastern Arizona while surplus precipitation is more likely from central Idaho to the north and east, with neither extreme favored elsewhere. As a whole, the outlook for the first three months of the year has enhanced chances for deficient precipitation from New Mexico and western Colorado westward through the southern half of Nevada and the central and southern sections of California. " (Emphasis added)

Re: Conditions In San Diego
Perhaps the lack of rain is a blessing. With the Pacific full of radiation from Fukushima acid rain could wipe out amphibians. Regarding the leak, it has been said that even people must condition themselves to stay out of the rain. Bummer, cause i love being in the rain chasing down salamanders.
Re: Conditions In San Diego
Thanks! If I did not find that salie I would have been one angry guy because I had over 5 miles to reach my carmattg wrote: nice find greg!
Out of all the herps that I have bled, exhausted myself and cursed over, it has to be those slender salamanders.

Re: Conditions In San Diego
This has been my raindance for the past few days...it could be my fault that we have no rain
Lack of rain aside I still went out looking for salies today and I found these.
2x Black bellied
1x California newt

I have cabin fever, and I am truly bummed about what is happening... This year combined with last year equals sadness.
The water rationing is here already, that normally doesn't happen until the summer.

Re: Conditions In San Diego
Looks like there is rain headed our way , big system over central valley/ sierras right now!
Re: Conditions In San Diego
We should see less than .2 inches, NOT enough. It will be soaked up and irrelevant. (Heck less than 30% chance of even that happening).....Looks like there is rain headed our way , big system over central valley/ sierras right now!
Not enough to get grass going, not enough for the herps to get a drink, not enough to fill vernal pools, not enough to create good snow pack, etc etc...
Just another disappointment and not enough to get me the least bit excited.

Re: Conditions In San Diego
We got about a quarter inch here in San Jose between 12:00AM and 6:00AM... we're now 20% normal season to date Blue sky is starting to poke through and the next rain probably won't be here until Sunday unless we get a Friday drizzle.

Hope it went well with your outing!mattg wrote: Same here
Mine search was not so fruitful. Found the 5 deer (did not care), same slender salie that I found earlier...and a few glances
Re: Conditions In San Diego
Sucks here too. I saw more Golden Eagles (3) than herps (2 Batrachoseps) in my 1.8 mile walk this morning.
Re: Conditions In San Diego
no herps today I tried a new spot, however there was tons of poison oak and about 2 dozen ticks found me!!
Re: Conditions In San Diego
looks like we all had some tough luck today
Still Owen you found two Batrachoseps! very jealous!
As for Matt...no no no no
I really hope I do not find your new spot anytime soon. Was in in the gabes or bernadinos?
Honestly rolling on poison oak seems much more enjoyable than just one tick. I freaked out when I found 3 on me (after playing dead to attract turkey vultures). 2 dozen is a nightmare

Re: Conditions In San Diego
You guys should all be ashamed of yourselves!! For all of your guys talk about 'LECHs", during 90% of our trips we deal with chiggers (by the hundreds), greenhead flies, ticks and mosquitos as well not to mention poison oak and thorns. 24 ticks is standard...........
Re: Conditions In San Diego
You don't see me complain about poison oak and thorns because the later make for cool "battle scars", while poison oak does not drink my bloodMarcLinsalata wrote: You guys should all be ashamed of yourselves!! As for the flies they give me much more problems than ticks but they have the less "now I have a disease" factor. My left arm literally has a few constellations because of all the fly bite scars I have

Re: Conditions In San Diego
I planted 52 birds (chucker, quail, pheasant) in the field, for hunters, and then clean/dressed them all... didn't see so much as a side blotch jim
