Re: WPTs
That is a ton of turtles, Hubbs. Looks like a bunch of rocks by the water.
Re: WPTs
Those two are regulars in a little tributary to Lake Casitas and even have names apparently, Mam (F) and Orata (M)Stephanie Pappas - WPT Researcher wrote:The large female on left has a notch on back right Scute.I just zoomed in on photo. That's a good id mark to track this turtle. Do you have pictures from past five years? The other one is a sub adult male.
Ancient who's seen a lot of stuff wrote:They've been there for a few years, even when the pool dried up, at least the smaller, paler one. That is the perfect habitat for them: an intermittent stream with pools. And yet that creek can roar and be several feet deep. These 'pond' turtles have been selected to haul out when they sense impending storms. The deselected lines end up on the beach to be feasted on by sea gulls.
Re: WPTs
Since you titled it WPTs, I figured that I would 'bump' and piggyback a little here given today ended up mostly a turtle day for me. I probably saw around 50:
There were probably 8, 9 or more here. They kept plunking into the water as I approached.

Hard to tell from the picture, but the next two baby ones are between the size of a quarter and half-dollar:
I waited tor this one to surface about 3ft out. Mud level shot (love tilting rear screens!):

Re: WPTs
We don't...we use telephoto most of the time, at least, that's what I do. Ain't nobody got time to creep up on turtles for an hour.
All of those pics were from 50 to 200 feet away from the turtles, usually taken from a bridge or bluff above a creek. I put in a pic of a bridge in that group that shows the previous turtle on a rock at lower right in the pic.
Owen has a much better camera than I do, so I don't know how far away he was.
