2014 YOY Theme - Show us those kids for this year
In 2012, we did a “young of the year” (YOY) theme post. (http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/vie ... ll#p158502 )
I’d like to start another this year, so feel free to contribute any of this year’s YOY.
What brought this to mind was today I was when cleaning up old deck boards from the deck I just finished rebuilding.
Underneath one of the old boards was a brand new garter! The board had been down only two days.
This animal was only 15 feet from that same rock wall in last year’s YOY post.
PS
For Noah, my dog didn’t like the new deck and showed what real melancholy looks like!

I'll have to see if i have any YOY from this year... i'm not the best at estimating age unless it's really obvious.
Alright, you have to tell us the back-story about Noah and your melon-collie dog.

Haha On my screen the dog even has as blue hue! Nice deck. I think that makes it a board-er collie. For Noah, my dog didn’t like the new deck and showed what real melancholy looks like!
Here is my YoY contribution so far. There have been several southern toads around the pond.
Florida Watersnake

These show up like clockwork around here on about the 4th of July. I found this one on a brush pile in the alley (which was probably going to get tossed out) and relocated him (only a few yards) to my pepper plants. He did not stick around, unfortunately. They usually get there on their own (bell pepper plants are a magnet for green anoles).

I don't think I've seen a young green anole like that before. That is cute.

Here's mine:
Tropical House Gecko
Young Florida Leopard Frog that was living under a downspout splashguard at my house until heavy rains rolled through last week. I hope my amphibian ally is doing well! It could be a yearling, but I really don't know.
Southern toad that hangs out around my house

Here's one I found back in April. Apparently even this far south, they usually overwinter in the nest and emerge in March or early April. I saw this little guy crossing a road, making a mad dash for the water. I thought he was a big bug at first.

This is the only way I could get a picture of this little critter, it wouldn't have it any other way! Heterodon platirhinos.
At work. He/She is a little shy and I can't exactly pull him/her out for a better look. Gopherus polyphemus.
Just one button that I could count. Crotalus adamanteus. Received at work as a rescue from a US special forces members who did not want to kill it.

Eastern Fence Lizards are not a too special find in the dryer areas, but they are always special here on the wet side of the Appalachians.
It's good to see the new little ones.

Re: 2014 YOY Theme - Show us those kids for this year
My wife had told me she had seen a few baby geckos near our apartment and so last night I went and found them. I was expecting H. turcicus because of all of the geckos seen here, only one was H. mabouia. But these young look like H. mabouia to me. So perhaps on one side the complex we have breeding turcicus and on this side we have breeding mabouia.
The pictures don't really have a good reference, but both were probably no more than 3" long

These little guys have been, for me, amazing hard to find in the southern Appalachians.

Those are cute frogs Bill. Has anyone ever seen and photographed a YoY of Pseudacris ocularis? I'm guessing you would need one heck of a macro lens or perhaps a portable microscope!

The smallest I've seen was a pic by Dan Parker which he posted on the forum in Jan, 2011.

That would be an interesting project, to breed them then docment the entire life cycle.
Re: 2014 YOY Theme - Show us those kids for this year
I don't even know what ocularis eggs would look like. Its hard for me to imagine something that small that isn't an invert.

YOY's that I hatched out myself (see my "snake eggs" thread in the herpetoculture subforum for the whole story):

For Noah, this was a metamorph ocularis. It actually still had a small remnant tail (unfortunately I had low dof, a weird angle and no comparison object). It was about 1/3 the size of an adult, so it was infinitesimal.

Okay, and for the post, here is a hatching Kinosternon baurii from Miami-Dade. This guy was the size of my thumb nail.

Thanks Jake. 1/3 the size. Its a beautiful pic, but something to compare it to would have been nice. Did you use the 150mm on it?
I wonder what it eats and what eats it. ocularis is an interesting animal.

Yeah I know, but I absolutely despise any pictures (of mine) with unnatural objects in the picture. You will never see me posing with an animal or a picture of one in a tank; I try my best for as natural a shot as possible. I don't mind other people doing it, I'm just not a fan in my photography. But you are right, something to show size, even just for reference, would be nice.captainjack0000 wrote:Thanks Jake. 1/3 the size. This was the 150mm. It's held together with tape, glue and lots of hopes. Haha.

Re: 2014 YOY Theme - Show us those kids for this year
Yes. I prefer the in situ or natural shots too, but like with my toad photos, something for comparison is nice. There are plenty of natural looking toad pics out there. I pose many DORs next to my yardstick too figuring a researcher may find that useful. It really just depends upon the mood. Am I there to find herps and document they exist, or am I trying to create a photograph? I herp alone fairly often so sometimes all there is is my left hand with the animal and my right hand with the camera.
Love this theme too Bill. We should do themed posts more often.

Scaphiopus holbrookii
This was from back in April when the first 2014 cohort of metamorphs left the ponds. There were several more breeding events and metamorph cohorts throughout the year.

Found this mud snake, which I can only presume is from this year, since it was so minuscule in size.

I found this tiny recently metamorphosed Cope's gray treefrog on the plants that are planted along my house.

And since I've recently posted all of the neonate dusky pygmies in a post, I'll just post this photo, since I like how it shows their diminutive size on the road.

These are all super.
Nate's Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) still in the egg is the ultimate!
Only thing younger than that would be the gleam in his daddy's eye!
