All in situ. Some re-posted pics that I really like, some new. I also don't tweak my photo's after I take them. I have no idea how to mess with computer programs to edit photographs. I tried once, failed miserably, and I myself am fine with natural lighting.

For the snakes, they all saw me before I saw them. I'm not very good at sneaking up on snakes haha - they usually bolt or strike a pose before I notice them.

Here's one of my favorite in situ shots. This Viti Barred Treeskink (Emoia trossula) was basking right next to the trail in this little patch of sun on this leaning log.
It sat quite calmly while I took a series of shots. I doubt I could have posed it better.

Definitely a good idea to bump this one :)

Lowland litter frog (Leptobrachium abbotti) - In my opinion for a natural shot of this species you pretty much have to shoot them in-situ if disturbed they will couch down and no amount of effort can persuade them to assume a natural looking pose again, believe me I have tried and tried. Thus for a nice photo, the only solution is to sneak up on them, most of the time they see you or hear you coming and get scared and huddle down but sometimes I was able to approach them and get a natural in-situ shot.

Your flickr data says: ƒ/5.6 55.0 mm 1/100 400 Flash (on, fired). I think you may be confused about something, that really didn't look like a 4 second handheld exposure to me so I took a look. The shutter speed is 1/100th of a second which sounds much more likely. I thought maybe you confused your aperture with your shutterspeed but its at 5.6 so not sure where the 4 seconds comes from.

If he's shooting in total darkness, the only exposure on the image will be from the brief burst of light provided by the flash. If there's no other sources of light, he could take the photo with flash and swing the camera wildly for a couple seconds while it is still exposing, and really not change the image on the sensor much, other than introducing some noise and maybe slight blurring.

Here are a few from across the three countries I've lived and herped in. India, Israel, and California:

Awesome post! :thumb:

In situ photography is without a doubt, a higher level of field photography. More skill required by the photographer, more respect given to the subjects, and a far more rewarding experience. In the 5-6 years I've been doing this, these are the type of shots I'm most proud of... Cheers to, In situ
