ID needed please

Post by Mynki »

Hi all

I'm currently in Everglades City. I'm seeing lots of these lizards and would really appreciate an ID please. I think they're some kind of curly tailed skink, but am not 100% sure. Your help would be greatly appreciated confirming the species.

Thanks in advance.

Tá do nathair a nerodia (watersnake) -either a fospeiceas faciata, salann mangrove goirt nathair, nó b'fhéidir le beagán de araon. bhí an chósta ghnáthóg nó intíre? Try posting on the main forum too.

The baby lizards look like Northern curly-tailed lizards to me.

I'm going to disagree about that toad. I didn't think marinus had knobs like that one does. Looks to me like a regular old Southern, terrestris.

Everything else, I accept. :)

Like Berkeley said, it's a B. terrestris - they grow them real big in and around some of the pine rocklands in ENP and Big Cypress.

I second that. When I was in Australia I saw more than enough cane toads in NT and QLD to ingrain that species into my head haha. During a trip to Wakulla county FL in August 2013, at first I thought I saw a cane toad but once I caught the giant amphibian, I realized that it was just an enormous Anaxyrus terrestris about the size of a baseball. I remember reading that A. terrestris can live as old as 30 years. That coupled with an area rich in insects to feed upon can make some darn big A. terrestris. I had some pictures on my old laptop before it broke in half, I'll see if I can't find a way to get them off it somehow and onto my new computer.

I get IDs wrong frequently, so I have no problem backing off of my initial ID of cane toad. Berkely, Josh, and Simus, thank you for the clarification.

Thanks everyone. I thought the toad was a Southern, but it looked different to the others I saw as it has something stuck to its back and wondered if it was a different species.

Is this another Southern Toad?

Anyone know what type of water snake this is?

Your two most recent pics.

Looks like another southern toad. It at least is not an oak toad.

The snake is a brown water snake (Nerodia taxispilota)

ya ya y'all are right, it's a southern toad. Didn't really look close, it just looked really big and it was SoFlo. Hardly see anything but cane toads down there.

I've seen lots tonight, but none with this colouration. Thanks in advance. I also saw a common garter and a red bellied turtle to add to my list so am happy.

Thanks to all for your replies, I really appreciate your help.

Yep. That color is typical when young (stonger oranges) but usually fades to golds when they age. Not always though, of course.

Your turtles look like Florida red-belly (P. nelsoni) but its hard telling. Red-bellies have a cusp on their lips while pen. cooters do not. They are very similar animals and I've even heard of them hybridizing in places in S. Florida.

Sorry about giving basic ID advice in another language. I'm still simmering about the unusual infighting involving me.
