Western Hooknose Documentary -- The Farting Snake :)

Post by OrryMartinTX » August 15th, 2011, 12:16 pm

Hey guys!!!

I just got back from my West Texas herping trip and we filmed over 20 documentaries on the trip! We were very blessed and captured 51 snakes and over 70 documented herps. I just finished making this video for my students (I am a high school bio teacher) and wanted to share it with ya'll. This documentary is about the Western Hooknose and how it pops its cloaca to startle potential predators. We got some great audio of the snake making the famous poop sound :)

Western Hooknose Snake:

We also captured some great footage of a Texas Banded Gecko in shed while on a rock cut!:

I hope you guys enjoy them and I will be uploading plenty of more short documentaries as I finish them. Thanks for checking them out!!

Orry Martin

There's some interesting references there considering it's for a biology class.

I caught it on facebook last night. Very awesome and informative video for those that don't know about some of the defensive maneuvers snakes will employ! thanks for sharing, man!

I think you do a darned good job talking.... Especially working without a script! I'd have to voice over 90% of my vids!

That's not a hooknose, doofus. It's a flatulent desert cobra. Duh.

Keep up the good work Orry. :)

Thanks alot guys! I appreciate ya'll watching and thanks for the support. As for working without a script, that is the most difficult part of the docs. They are all free flowing off the top of my head and scripting would be a much smarter approach. However, I like to go herping more than I like to spend time filming docs :) Hopefully I will get better at it with practice.

Dan the Man, it is great to see you on here!!!! I love the TMNT avatar as well :)

Without a doubt that was the most informative field documentary that I have ever seen posted on the forum or anywhere for that matter at any point in time in the history of movie making.

Haha!! Scott, that was hilarious.

We film with a Canon XH-A1 and a Sennheiser microphone. I believe the mic is a K6, but I am not sure. Our secondary camera is just a Sony handycam SR1 HD. I take photos with a Nikon D200.

High art with a capital F! ;) Excellent video, sound and narrative. This is very well done. I appreciate the audio, as few non-herpers readily believe in farting snakes. My camera failed to pick up decent audio of a coral doing the same, so it has been tough to convince some friends that mammals aren't the only branch of the animal kingdom equipped with rectal sonar.

Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing the rest of your vids.

Thanks alot Verhoodled!! That was my main thing is to make sure we capture the sound of him popping. We used a boom pole with the mic pointed right at him just to make sure. Thanks for watching buddy!!
