Best herp!
Hey guys! Post a pic of your best/favorite herp that you've found so far! I'm pretty excited to see these pics lol
Re: Best herp!
Let's see how many people can actually post just one.
Re: Best herp!
I'd say my favorite was this Kirtland's Snake I found last year in late October. It was my best field-herping day ever...and that was before I came across this lifer. Unfortunately, I haven't really done much field-herping since :/ Perhaps another reason it is my favorite is because I found it; for some reason, my dad usually finds the coolest stuff on our trips
Re: Best herp!
Wow, I'm glad you challenged me to find the only digital picture of my most recent favorite find! I didn't think I even still had it.
This was my first ever l.t.syspila! Found it under a rock on the edge of a pond where I wasn't expecting to find anything other than maybe a d.punctatus or a n.sipedon.

Re: Best herp!
This was last year, and I've certainly had some memorable finds since then, but this HUGE, adult male western hog which I cruised with my son, Fischer and some friends was a GREAT MEMORY....
Alejandro Lozano took this shot of Erik, myself, and Fischer taking pictures of our prize.
Earlier that same day we got this hatchling as well....
Another car got this little one which I was able to photo:
Chad Whitney snapped a shot of me teaching Fischer how to tail a bullsnake... GREAT MEMORY...
Here's the boy doing what his daddy taught him:
Anyway... yeah, posting one is tough.

Re: Best herp!
After seeing pictures of one of these as a kid, I always wanted one. I found this in Sumatra in December of 2010 when the desire to keep herps had long since passed.

Mine is nothing compared to these. I am sorry for the really bad picture quality I was still learning how to use my camera, this is my brothers find but I was the only one with a camera so I took the picture.
Re: Best herp!
Nonsense. Did you see mine? Nothing special about a red milk snake, but it was special to me. That's all that mattersJJuLLiAAn wrote:Mine is nothing compared to these.
Re: Best herp!
lol, might want to find a pics of an actual stejnegeri. A old FHF user took that shot, and she's from KS too.M.J.FRANETOVICH wrote: Hahahaha!!! Stejnegeri

I actually think this shot is rather artistic. (even if it was an accident)
That is what rough greens are like. Green in a sea of green. Fleeting glimpses of vertebral movement among the swaying of the leaves. Nice one!

You'll find one, just keep looking. They are very secretive snakes.JJuLLiAAn wrote:I would love to find a Milk snake, that is the #1 on my list of what I want to find!KingCam wrote:Nonsense. I know it's been tough with the drought and all, but you can still turn them up in the sprinkler-infested habitats within the metropolitan area of Houston, TX.

Re: Best herp!
Thanks Matthijs. Having seen your work, that coming from you is very cool!
Re: Best herp!
I couldn't decide between an elapid i found in 2008 or a Morelia oenplliensis I found back in January. Toxicity won out in the end!
Not the best shots but a pretty cool animal anyway.
Oxyuranus microlepidotus Inand Taipan.

My first day of spring break in 2010.....record length Florida Burmese 16' 9"
Re: Best herp!
Brick911, your assumption is correct!
These were my favorite finds over the years, not just because of the animal but all of the variables also. Not the greatest pics but most are from over 6 years ago and I could not afford much for a digi-cam.

Oh, I'm one of the few rational people that have chosen to let their lawns turn brown and die instead of wasting water fighting off the inevitable during the worst drought in recent record.MHollanders wrote:I know it's been tough with the drought and all, but you can still turn them up in the sprinkler-infested habitats within the metropolitan area of Houston, TX.

Re: Best herp!
Way too many to choose from. I opted for favourite species of herp, rather than favourite individual herps, found while herping.
Crocodylus porosus
Varanus varius
Varanus komodoensis
For individual herp, finding this Varanus rosenbergi digging her nest in a termite mound was pretty cool.
