Currently avoiding snow and real cold in FL, planning a run into Centruroides guanensis habitats to attempt new images of guanensis and do more habitat shots...plus look for multiple non native Anolis for images.

I am intimately aware of population guesstimates in the area, and no doubt if this fire was happening during peak activity times rather than hibernation periods there might be serious casualties...

In the end I doubt seriously if there will be much loss at all for slumbering serpents.

Fires have been happening since before humans meandered into horridus habitat...humans are a far greater threat to horridus survival than fire.
ST. Louis is right that hibernacula and den sites will benefit from some clearing, and forests as a whole bounce back fast.

I love Polistes...amazing species with personality and definitely not the zealot aggressive defenders that Vespa species are! The C. gracilis are large and common, and a popular species...

Hard to say, but could be possible...

The image does not allow a decent view of the face, so for me looking at the head and eye...I see something with a blunt face and not

Got to play with one a friend bought...interesting camera and the zoom ability is truly beyond belief, however...without being mounted to a serious tripod most of that zoom capability is wasted.

Your unknown insect is an Acharia sp. Caterpillar (possibly nesea). Accidentally leaning your forearm against one to photograph other things is highly unpleasant!

For a trip such as this I would look into renting a lens...since you have canon...the 300f4l might be something to look into for rental of the trip. It is a fast lens that would allow you to reach out and capture images from a distance!

There has been a large breeding population in Cades Cove TN for at least 8 years that I know of.... I assume introduced as the bubble that exists devoid of them (so far) all the way around.

Yes Tonia, it was clipped in the head by a car. Although enucleated, I do believe it survived the incident, as it was fiesty and walking well as it left the road way while I was photographing it... It was the worst part of the evening.
