cross country turtle/herp trip
“The Great American Turtle Chase”, that is the name we finally decided on calling this crazy trip I took back at the beginning of April. It was my friend Anthony’s idea to drive across the country trying to find as many turtle species along the way. The rough idea was to generally follow the path of...

Nice! The gecko is actually Lepidodactylus lugubris Thanks, I think you are right but are you positive? I was going back and forth between the two. April Costa Rica trip
In the middle of April I went on a short trip to Costa Rica with my family. We stayed in the La Fortuna area for 4 days. Here are some cell phone photos from the trip. One day was spent rafting down a slow river looking for wildlife. There were lots of green iguanas perched both high and low on bran...

Yeah, I was curious if you knew if the ones you saw were doing something different the norm. As far as I knew, they all overwinter in permanent water and move to the vernals in the spring.

I was also in SE AZ during the same time. Nightime cruising was mostly unsuccessful, a couple atrox, one mojave, and one sidewinder in 4 nights. Daytime hiking at elevation yielded better results. I think the cool rain every afternoon that lingered for hours really shut down the nightime activity. G...

Nothing from that other pic leads me away from Cyclemys, so Im sticking with it. There are several Cyclemys species that are VERY similar in appearance, and Im not totally up on their individual ranges, so I wont venture a guess as to which species it may be.

Ill take a stab at the turtles. The first I feel pretty good about calling Cuora amboinensis. The second is a guess with Cyclemys sp. Any more pics of that one? Captive turtles can be difficult because they could be from anywhere in the world and often show abnormal growth.

Lots of great tips already mentioned. The only thing I have to add is all the national parks close EARLY. That means no night hiking there. So either plan on roadcruising or plan on staying at a lodge/hotel/camp with their own property. National Parks also don't like hooks.
