Although it is a close up and doesn't show the environment (and it is on a boardwalk trail), this shot is natural and was not set up at all. I was laying on the ground for 15 minutes without moving until this Garter snake returned to its sunbathing area. Taken with a Sigma 150mm macro on a Canon 7D, hand held...
That's really quite nice. I like the composition, the tongue, well done.

Thank you, I appreciate your comment and am glad you like it.

Thank you! It was actually a shot I envisioned before I even made it down to Mexico (where this was taken), while doing research on the area I started picturing this type of shot with a croc in the foreground and the lake behind it, I didn't think I'd actually be able to get it though but somehow everything came together for me! I was a bit nervous dangling right over the crocs snout but it was worth it.

Anton, I love everything about this shot except the tilted horizon! That always bugs me for some reason.

Haha Believe me I know, no matter how many times I see that shot the first thing that jumps out at me is the tilted horizon, I have a version somewhere on a harddrive where its fixed in photoshop but the original tilted horizon is the one I have uploaded online. I really wish I had been more careful initially and just got it straight the first time. I don't know what it is about holding a camera level but I have more than my fair share of crooked horizon shots, its something I need to work on.

Yeah, I've got tons that I've had to correct. I think about it more often now, but when I'm photographing something I get so caught up in the moment and I'll fixate on the position of the subject and completely forget that the horizon is at a 40° angle!

It was intended to show a semblance of the habitat. The trash behind it, the board, and the foot of the other herper holding the board up.

I did take a more standard photo though:

I hate that I forgot to grab my diffuser when I first set out last week to take photos of this calling Carolina gopher frog.

I took some more photos, but they were reluctant to call whenever I pointed my camera at them.

The best thing about leaving snakes alone and just taking in-situ photos is the potential to observe an individual on multiple occasions (this is especially true of vipers). I found this cottonmouth coiled at the edge of a large palmetto and took a few photos without disturbing it.

Image

Image

Two days later I was able to find the snake again just a few feet from it's original location.

I argue this all the time, but I pick up and handle many snakes and find them over and over again. For example, I just posted some photos on Flickr of a Western coachwhip. I caught it at the same spot three times last year, photographed it twice. Again, it was at the same spot this year, ready for another photo session. I was happy to see him and his girlfriend had babies and I found one of the offspring there too.

My one and only reptile so far this year, a snapper basking in the shallows on a sunny day. It was still fairly cold out with ice on certain parts of the same pond the snapper was in. It barely moved in the 20 min or so that I watched, it would occasionally raise or lower its nose above or below the surface of the water, but it never even opened its eyes.

Here's another racer species photographed in situ. I spent years trying to find one of these to photograph with no success. Everytime I saw one it was shooting off into the brush or grass. However this individual froze when I walked up on it and let me shoot a couple of photos before it bolted.

Speckled Racer (Drymobius margaritiferus)

Image

The thing about Drymobius that is so amazing is how beautiful they are in the field in natural light. Photos simply don't do them justice!

Racers in general seem to be one of the more difficult groups of serpents to get semi-decent in situ shots of. Nowhere near as beautiful as Drymobius supposedly balkan racers are not the easiest of the group either. Nonetheless, two of the five I've seen gave me the chance. Here's one:

Thanks, Bill! The compression on facebook is awful, but usually when bringing an image up there on full screen it looks fairly correct.

Chris I'm on mobile or I'd just embed the photo here, but if you follow the link in the in situ shot out to my Flickr page, the photo after capture is either just one before or after this one. It's hard to get a perspective of size in the photo, but that would be one big opheodrys if that's what it was! But seeing it in person, in situ, it was obviously a yellow bellied racer. You're not the first to think it was a green snake though.

I don't think this photo is anything special, but it's been weirdly popular (for one of my photos) on Flickr. I suspect it's just because it's a pretty snake:
