Monographs or field guides for Argentina and/or Chile

Post by Kyle from Carolina »

Does anybody know of a country-wide field guide to Chile or Argentina? I've found some peer-reviewed pubs that focus on specific regions or inventory surveys, but I can't find the equivalent of a 'snakes of argentina', etc. I don't necessarily want one from the countries north of the cone, as I'm interested in distributions of animals in Patagonia. I've followed a few citations in some of the pubs but they seem to lead to books that are unavailable or no longer in print (i.e. serpientes de noroeste argentina). I am curious to know if anybody has any good recommendations? I expect that they would be in spanish, which is fine.

I am grateful for any suggestions.

I found a pdf for a Chilean guide to Amphibians online here, it's focus is largely on conservation but it does have a species account section in the back. I am sure it will also have a good number of publications that you can skim through in its bibliography: http://www.travelchiloe.com/sites/defau ... _chile.pdf

I do not think that there's a good guide or book strictly for Argentina or Chile available right now online and with the current updates to taxonomy. However, there are good books on the herps further north in Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil, which may be in the same geographic regions that you are requesting. I would suggest scanning through some of those peer-reviewed reports that you found as well. Furthermore, there are some fantastic web resources that are available. Unfortunately, most of them are in Spanish, but the information is pretty good.

Here's a pdf of "Reptiles del Uruguay" by Carreira et al. (2005): http://www.serpentario.edu.uy/reptiles/ ... ruguay.pdf

Of all the web resources, this one is my favorite: http://www.sib.gov.ar/taxonomia/clase/reptilia

Another one on the venomous snakes: http://cyt-ar.com.ar/cyt-ar/index.php/S ... _Argentina

One on amphibians of argentina: http://coana.com.ar/anfibios/

And one on the animals of the Atacama: http://www.geovirtual2.cl/animal/intro01esp.htm

I can probably find some publications on specific species on your request. Just leave me a reply if you have a snake or any other herp in mind that you want information on and I can do my best to find you a paper.

Thanks,

- Justin

Haven't visited that area of the world, just have a bit of literature from that neck of the woods since South America's herpetofauna is always fascinating
